Worried about allegations of election fraud in Alabama, Governor Bob Riley's abuses of power and Karl Rove's alleged criminality in the state? No worries, get the Attorney General, Troy King, out claiming election fraud in largely black (read: Democratic) areas:
"Federal and state authorities are looking into accusations of voting fraud in three largely black counties of Alabama, including Perry and Lowndes Counties, which played a historic role in the struggle for black voting rights in the 1960s.
In May, a local citizens group gathered affidavits detailing several cases in which at least one Democratic county official paid citizens for their votes, or encouraged them to vote multiple times. The affidavits were presented to state officials in Montgomery, the capital, and after the June 3 primary, the Alabama attorney general, Troy King, a Republican, seized voting records from the primary election in Bullock, Lowndes and Perry Counties.
The United States Department of Justice posted a team of observers to monitor the primary, and the Alabama secretary of state, Beth Chapman, a Republican, reported hearing from one of the federal observers that a candidate had “free rein” of a polling place, where campaigning is prohibited, passing out sample ballots and instructing voters how to vote."
A local citizens group gathered affidavits? Interesting. Because having spent a good deal of time in Alabama over the last 6 months, I have yet to hear anyone - Democrat or Republican - make these allegations. By the way, many of the allegations relating to team Rove in Alabama have everything to do with actual election fraud, including dates, names, etc. Dan Gans, for example, is alleged to have flipped Siegelman votes to Riley votes in Baldwin County in the 2002 election. When Siegelman made a stink about the voodoo math, it was team Rove who went after him. Here is more from the article, strangely out today - the day Rove skipped out on his Congressional subpoena:
"The Democracy Defense League, a biracial citizens group that has been critical of voting abuses in the area for the last three years, submitted affidavits to Mr. King and federal officials saying that some people voted six times in the same election.
The accusations have roiled this old plantation country of rich soil, impoverished people and unremitting distrust between black majorities and white minorities, where several trials and indictments in vote fraud cases have already occurred over the years — in 1985, 1997 and 2007 — some of which resulted in convictions of county and city officials."
Not only do I call bullshit, but I will actually investigate this now that it has come to my attention and if I find anything that supports these allegations, I will make a full and very public apology. I assume that Mr. King, Ms. Chapman, and the concerned citizens making these allegations should have no problem sharing their findings with me. If, however, I find that Mr. King and his ilk are cooking up claims (again), then I will expect his resignation and a full accounting to Congress by Attorney General Mukasey as to why federal resources were once again being used for political reasons.
