dow jones industrial average close on friday, january 19, 2001: 10,587.59
dow jones industrial average close at the moment, mid morning july 11, 2008: 11,124.
growth = 536.41 points = 5.07% in 7.5 years

this works out to 0.66% per year

another week like this one and we're into negative territory.

shrub might well close out his 8 years with the dow lower than where he inherited it. this is a rarity for any president, but i'd rather guess it's unprecendented for a two-termer.
