‘Aunt Hillary’ Speaks at Bronx Graduation

By Sharon Otterman

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has been keeping a low profile since conceding the Democratic nomination on June 7, but she made an exception this morning to speak at the high school graduation of a 17-year-old girl from the Bronx who calls her “Aunt Hillary.”

Aleatha Williams, 17, first met Senator Clinton at the age of 2, on the shoulder of her mother Patricia. She was one of those innumerable babies at political events that politicians hug, but in the case, the squeeze became the start of a life-long bond.

Aleatha’s mother, Patricia Williams, then involved in an abusive marriage, was attending the 1992 Democratic Convention as a political volunteer. As Mrs. Clinton, who was soon to be first lady, passed her in the aisle, she reached out to Aleatha. The she put her arms around Patricia.

“She knew I needed a hug somehow, and she just squeezed. And I felt a strength and energy flowing through her. She helped to give me the strength I needed at that time to go on with my life and do what’s right for my daughter,” Ms. Williams said in an interview after the graduation ceremony.

1. I admire that Hillary too
I'm very serious about hoping Obama creates a trail-blazing post for her and puts her in charge of Women's Children's Affairs (International & Domestic). I can't think of a better person It would allow her to do alot of lasting good and give those issues visibility.

3. I'm still hoping for VP.

I want her to be president some day and it would give her a leg up on the job. I know that the odds are against it.........

4. If Obama picks her for VP, you won't hear a peep out of me
I still like my idea better because nobody is focusing on women and children. Even if he picks Hillary for VP, I'd like to see his administration create such a post and give it the importance it deserves. She's honestly the best known person I can think of for the role. :hi:

8. If she does, I'm moving to a different board my friend ;)
Something along the lines of a whale watching board. I'm not fighting ever again like we fought over these primaries. That was way too brutal. Have you seen MarrahG around lately?

9. Why the fight?
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 11:21 PM by Beacool
Her opponents would be other people, not Obama.

Who's MarrahG?

10. Primaries in general. I'm done. MarrahG was a Clinton supporter here
A very cool woman. I haven't seen her around and hope she's not around for good reasons.

12. A good majority of Clinton supporters left the board.
It got too nasty and we were outnumbered. Most have not returned, they went to friendlier sites.

who wants to sully her image. Not buying it at all.

14. It's not a wise strategy - it hands mcLame ammo in the form of two videos.
With the Tuzla video, he easily proves clinton a liar.

With the video of her endorsing his (insane) experience over Obama's "speech", he undercuts the ticket.

Not a wise move.

19. Yes. I do not like proven liars. This is true. I freely admit that.
And yes, I do diss liars. Again, I don't like them.

Neither of which distracts from the fact that mcLame's already using her endorsement of him over Obama in his ads, or that he can easily prove clinton a liar via the Tuzla video were Obama to select her.

It would be a strategic blunder.

2. Great story
thanks for that.

It's so easy to forget that a LOT of people get involved in politics because they truly care about people and want to make a difference. We get so jaded that it's too easy to forget that.

6. There are many stories like this one.
Hillary has touched the lives of many people. She does it quietly and without fanfare. As we campaigned, there were many people who would tell us they supported her because of something that Hillary had done for them.

For example:

- One woman told the story about her husband having broken his back in 2001 and left paralyzed from the neck down. They had joined an online support group and were devastated when Christopher Reeve died as he had been their biggest advocate. To cope with their loss, the group decided to hold a rally in DC and sent invitations to several politicians. The woman described the first rally as being "pitiful", small and with no media attention. There was only one politician who showed up: Hillary. She was not running for anything at the time. She gave a speech and asked how she could be of help. She also talked to every person in a wheelchair and their families. Hillary showed up the following year and the year after that. Many of those people (some of them Republicans) campaigned for Hillary in their states.

21. Thanks for sharing this, Beacool. We might have had her for our President ... I'm sorry so many
jumped ship.

I'll be happy to vote the Democratic ticket in November 2008.

We'll still have Hillary as a proud Democrat hopefully for years and years.
