McCain: I'm Both For More Oil Exploration And For Conservation
This guy is whacked. He can't have it both ways, though he's trying.

McCain: I'm Both For More Oil Exploration And For Conservation
By Eric Kleefeld - June 17, 2008, 9:04AM

John McCain will deliver a speech today in Houston on energy policy, seeking to satisfy the goals of both environmentalists and those who want a more plentiful oil supply.

"We have proven oil reserves of at least 21 billion barrels in the United States," McCain will say, according to pre-released excerpts. "But a broad federal moratorium stands in the way of energy exploration and production. And I believe it is time for the federal government to lift these restrictions and to put our own reserves to use."

McCain will also say: "In the face of climate change and other serious challenges, energy conservation is no longer just a moral luxury or a personal virtue. Conservation serves a critical national goal. Over time, we must shift our entire energy economy toward a sustainable mix of new and cleaner power sources."

2. When McCain says "over time,"
he means geological time. He knows dinosaurs were contemporary with early humans because he remembers them.

3. I Really Don't Understand the Contradiction
I would hope that both things are always going on.

5. The main point he is trying to sell is the one I heard Mitch McConnell
trying to sell in the Senate during the debate on the Energy Bill. They are trying to say the ONLY WAY we can lower the cost of oil is to increase supply, and the ONLY WAY we can increase supply is by going in to ANWR and drilling offshore the United States. The problem with this argument is it does nothing to reduce prices because we need to reduce demand significantly to actually lower prices. Demand is growing faster than these supply increases would help. So we need to reduce demand through better fuel mileage in our vehicles and full plug in commuter class vehicles.

They are not for putting serious weight behind a push for these new technologies. They are for more drilling to increase the profits for big oil, but more drilling will do nothing for the consumer price of gasoline.

I wish a Democrat would have the balls to stand up and say, fine if you want to open up offshore drilling and ANWR you can but the whole thing needs to be Nationalized if you do. If they really think this is a good idea then they shouldn't object to an offer like that. Unless of course, they are only doing it to increase big oil profits, which of course is THE ONLY reason they are working for more drilling.

6. The drilling in ANWR is a distraction. 75 cent/barrel savings doesn't
seem to be worth ruining a wildlife reserve. I wish a Dem would point out that fun little fact.

ANWR drilling could cut 75 cents from oil prices, DOE says
By Rex Nutting
Last update: 10:20 a.m. EDT May 22, 2008

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Producing oil from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska could cut crude oil prices by about 75 cents per barrel by 2025, the Energy Department said Thursday in a special analysis prepared for Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska. The price decline would be about 0.6% of the current spot price. Under federal law, no drilling is now allowed in ANWR. Under the most likely case, production would begin in 2018 and peak in 2027 at 780,000 barrels per day, with total production of 2.6 billion barrels. End of Story

8. What I don't understand is why Republicans go to bat for big oil on this
one. Even if they do get lots of money for their campaign's they are getting their asses kicked in elections because of such horrendous views. You have to be seriously stuck on stupid not to see this is a sell-out by the Republicans.

I guess if they want to be that far right-wing our response should just be to give them as much rope as they need to hang themselves.
