Gore Vidal: US needs 100 years to recover from Bush
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,23866505-954,00.html
From correspondents in Madrid

IT will take the the United States a century to recover from the damage wreaked by President George W Bush, US writer Gore Vidal said in an interview published today.

"The president behaved like a virtual criminal but we didn't have the courage to sack him for fear of violating the American constitution,'' Mr Vidal told the El Mundo newspaper.

The author, a trenchant critic of the US-led invasion of Iraq, said it would take the United States 100 years to repair the damage caused by Bush.

"We live in a dictatorship. We have a fascist government ...which controls the media,'' he said.

Mr Vidal also said presidential aspirant Barack Obama was intelligent and that it would be a novelty to have an intelligent person in the White House.

I have come back to you broken
take me home
And my body bears this trouble
take me home
Take me back to my beginning
Before the hell of night set in
And I came to this border
take me home

I have toured the endless starlight
take me home
I have shattered under midnight
take me home
There are no vultures in this clearing
Except the ones who brought me here
And I'll no longer feed them
take me home

Kingdom come, their will was done
And now the earth is far away
from any kind of heaven
Hallowed be these frozen fields
And every single one of us
still left in want of mercy
Take us home

Now the bells stand still and hollow
take me home
And no one has come to mourn me
take me home
Find me where I close my eyes
Beneath this sky of powerlines
And let me see us clearly
take me home

Kingdom come, their will was done
And now the earth is far away
from any kind of heaven
Hallowed be these frozen fields
And every single one of us
Still left in want of mercy
Take us home...

3. Do see the source of the interview (in Spanish), here:

Worth translating in entirety. Do anyone around here in DU have the resources to do this? (The USA is also, after all, a not insignificant Spanish-speaking country) If not, perhaps I will have a go, slowly, myself.

I'll translate, roughly, this passage here:

--> Q: In one of your most recent books, "Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace", you speak of a coup d'etat behind 9/11...
R: It was not committed directly by Bush, rather it was Dick Cheney and the Pentagon hawks. It was an arrangement akin to that of Japan in the 17th century: a Mikado without power, in the hands of a vice-president 'shogun' and his warrior advisors. The only lacked a 'casus belli' in order to launch their barrage of lies, and later this militarist and Orwellian concept of war against terror, which is an adaptation of Truman's invention of Cold War.
Q: But you wouldn't deny that 9/11 looked like the closest thing to an attack...
R: Yes, but carried out in any case by Osama Bin Laden and another two or three people, not by an army of millions of Islamic radicals, as they would like us to believe. And of course not by Sadam Hussein.
Q: You also assert that the Bush Administration allowed 9/11 to happen...
R: There is a report that was submitted to the President weeks (prior) entitled "Bin Laden disposed to attack the USA". This warned of the possibility of attacks using commercial airplanes. Do we need any further proof? The fact is that we have a President so lazy that he doesn't even read the reports that they prepare for him...

edit: There's plenty more to Vidal's (a Kucinich supporter, BTW) bleak vision: the (propaganda) build-up to a possible attack on Iran before November; Martial Law coming to the USA; the (bankrupt, Imperial dreams ruined) USA eventually finding it's place somewhere at a level between Argentina and Brazil...

4. I think I'd translate tras as "after" or "following" not "behind"
I think Vidal is more LIHOP than MIHOP.

6. Well, yes but: Checking the Spanish Royal Academy's dictionary,
I see that tras can have either meaning.

Referring back to Vidal's interview with Amy Goodman, the transcript has him saying:

... I didn’t realize—I think I’ve always had a good idea about my native land, but I didn’t think that institutionally we were so easy to overthrow, because it was a coup d’etat, 9/11. The whole went crashing...
http://www.democracynow.org/2008/5/14/legendary_author_gore_vidal_on_the

I thought his meaning was quite clear.

Hell, at least a visible majority of, including 'heavyweight' people, are now talking about possible degrees of LIHOP and/or MIHOP, rather than taking seriously the "official conspiracy theory".

7. The nation is not likely to ever recover from the countless trillion of dollars of
fraud, waste, abuse, carnage, destruction, budget deficits, and damage to the economy, the jobs' market, the standard of living, the dollar, you name it, inflicted by junior to the continuous rapturous applause of tens of millions of Amurikkkans. :D

8. I never realized that Gore Vidal was such an optimist. 100 years? Pshaw!
If the country lasts 50 more years as a viable nation it'll be nothing short of miraculous.

Maybe as a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft...
