The Left Need Its Own Anne Coulter
In Hockey, they are referred to as "Goons". If another team tries to take out your star player, you have a Goon who would retaliate. In its own way, it keeps the game clean. Clearly, Anne Coulter is the goon of the right. Her job is to slash and burn Democrats and the Liberals, yet because she's not directly tied to the Republican party nor any of its candidates, she gets away with it. There's no one to muzzle her. Then, it's left it up to the Democratic candidates to respond because if they do not, then they're looked upon as being weak. If they do respond in kind, then they look childish.

The answer is that the left needs it own goon. We need someone to slash and burn the right every time Anne takes a swipe. For example, a good response to Anne's slur would have been an ad saying that Guiliani's kid does not even talk to him any more. Yes, make it personal, and put a hurt on the Republicans. Every Anne Coulter personal attack is met with in kind.

The problem that the left has is that we look weak whenever these idiots take a swipe. We use to think that the media would do its job and referee. Clearly that's no longer the case. We must take matters into our own hands and fight back.

1. No thanks
I'd rather her aggression just go unchecked. She does more harm to her cause than good, believe me.

I do think the left as a whole could speak with more a prophetic ferver. Randi Rhodes is decent at it. Neil Rogers is the master, but he's relegated to the South Florida radio market.

5. Kerry Tried That in 2004
In today's politics that does not matter. You cannot take the high road. I'm not saying that someone from Edwards' campaign should take her on, but someone on the left needs to respond to this idiot in kind.

This slur will resonate if left unchecked.

38. Ann's crap
is not the same as the swift boat attacks. The swifts muddled the facts so those who wanted to believe truly believed. They yelled over and over about a from 180 or something ..Kerry didn't file one ..blah blah blah...if anyone on the news or otherwise bothered to look up the form it was just a request for info..you had specify on the form what info you wanted.

Ann is not of the same caliber. It is simply not the same..

HOnestly I am not sure there was a good way to fight the swiftys...more so than there lies and spin was the fact that the lap dog media gave such a blatant load of shit the time of day as legit...same goes for Ann I don't mind she gets coverage but she should never be seen as legit source ..She is a poster girl for hate speech and should be reflected by any honest media as such.

27. I Agree Also...No More Mr. Nice Guy
Your typical American moron does not understand what the "high road" is. Politics are a government version of The Jerry Springer Show now, and it's high time that we fight fire with fire.

We already sort of do, what with the outrage of the "librul blogs" and all. But I agree with the original post. Enough is enough and Jesus knows that they provide us with enough material.

31. Kerry's mistake wasn't in taking the high road
Kerry's mistake was in not responding at all. He let the swiftboaters go for over a month without saying anything. Had he started immediately with an answer, he would have looked better.

IMO what we need to do is shame the right. We need to make it clear that remarks like coulter's come from emotional retardation, and anyone who laughs uproariously at calling John Edwards a 'f*g' is a complete jerk and at the level of junior high maturity, because if they were more grown-up they would have grown out of that crap. What I'd like to see is Coulter on some panel with one of ours, and our guy says something like "I'm surprised you didn't say Edwards has cooties. Aren't you overdue for a game of hide and seek or something? Why don't you go out and play and let the adults handle things?" Slam her with an accusation of immaturity every time she opens her mouth. That will shut her up, and her followers too because they'll be stigmatized with something they know already to be true.

You say that Coultergeist is the right-wing goon whose job it is to slash and burn Democrats and the Liberals and we need a left-wing mechanism to slash and burn Repubs and reactionaries, but we already have a left-wing mechanism to slash and burn. It's called the truth.

16. Nope
It doesn't fit out style. If I could refer to that classic movie "Cool Runnings" there's a bit where the Jamacain team is pissed at their leader for wanting them to be Swiss. The guy says "All I'm saying, mon, is if we walk Jamaican, talk Jamaican, and *is* Jamaican, then we sure as hell better bobsled Jamaican."

Same here - we're liberal - it's not going to work for us the same way it does for them. Being a paranoid, mean-spirited, lying, fear-mongering, hate-mongering people is not only immoral, it's also stupid.

That said, I am in favor of hitting back - I just think there's something between being pansies and being Ann Coulter.

Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 12:45 PM by BeyondGeography
our candidates have to take the high road, but there's no one at Anne's level to say, hey, where's the HUSBAND, Anne? Why does the family values party embrace a single, NYC-dwelling, bile swilling careerist? I know we're nicer than the Right, but we are living in Trash Talk Nation, after all.

Plus, the manner in which our candidates take the high road is a little weak, in my view. How about, "It's a sign of the bankruptcy of the Republican Right's rhetorical bank account that one of their chief messagers has to stoop to such depths to stir the faithful," etc.

The radio waves are owned by the RW.

They can pontificate, slander, and obfuscate from sun-up to sundown.

They breathe life into the Ann Coulters of the world.

We don't need a narrow-minded, shrill counterpoint to that kind of creature.

23. It won't Help. I don't think it is possible for a true progressive to think like an Anne Coulter
If you are a true progressive you care about what you say about other Human beings. On some level people like Anne Coulter are sociaopaths. They are basically about destroying other human beings if not physically then certainly emotionally. Anne's purpose in life is Anne. She wants the attention. If she had comapsiion whe would not even be able to conceive of the thought process that would bring her to the point of saying such vile and meanspirited things about other human beings. It is telling that she finds acceptance in the heart and soul of right winged politics. That is all we really need to say about Anne. Just remind people of the hatred she represents (The kind of hatred that brings events in history like Krystal Nacht, Rawanda, The killing fields of Cambodia etc etc etc)and that the Republican party finds Anne to be a "Refreshing" pundit.

39. I Think That You Give The American People Too Much Credit
And I fear that the 2008 elections will bear me out. The GOP is very, very good at "winning" elections. They are better at politics in general. It's lousy, but it's true. The American people do not understand "classy." They understand slogans that can fit neatly on a bumpersticker. And soundbites. (Soundbytes?) They do not care about issues, only appearances and the superficial and shallow.

I say that as an American citizen, god help me. I hope that you are indeed right, because I like your viewpoint a whole lot better than mine.

I say that we should spend our energy working hard to hold up every horribly evil thing she spews to public scrutiny. We make sure everyone knows who she is, what she says, and that she is a loved and respected Republican appearing on their shows and at their conventions.

I want every citizen of the US to think of her (and Cheney, and Delay, and Savage, and all those heinously evil people who have worked so hard to wreck our country) when they hear the word "Republican".

We really don't need any of that evil ourselves, but I concur we cannot just sit there and ignore her. That only lets her keep spewing.

I heard it from a freeper co-worker today and now it's on Fox. Bill Maher said that (gasp) more people would be alive today if Cheney was killed. They think this makes up for what AC said!

From Fox News:

Quoting the blog, Maher said, "I have zero doubt that if Dick Cheney was not in power, people wouldn’t be dying needlessly tomorrow."

Asked by Frank if Maher believed that sentiment, the host replied, "I’m just saying if he did die, other people, more people would live. That’s a fact."

There are things to be learned from the right's goon squad playbook, starting with the fact that they rarely, if ever, apologize for anything no matter how crazy it is.

People need to take off their idealism (aka- rose colored) glasses and see politics for the game that it is.

They benefit from the garbage that Anne spews while at the same time they can decry her statements. In a sense, she's worse than a hockey goon. She's like a fan that comes out of the stands and hits your star player while the other team expresses faux outrage at such behavior.

Any time Ann Coulter opens her big mouth, we're always quick to point out how crazy she is. Imagine if we had somebody on our side who was that extreme (and who was also a huge media whore), the rest of the media, like Fox News, would be quick to point out how crazy we are, using said person as a prime example.
