We have had a flood of VERY EFFECTIVE MCCAIN ADS HERE IN PA for days now...objectively, they're GOOD...they begin by him telling everyone that only a fool or a fake speaks romantically of war and then goes on to state his and his family's 'qualifications', as it were. They show a 'quiet competence and sincerity'...now WE KNOW BETTER here at DU...McCain's folks aren't going to put forth an ad saying "...and I really didn't mean it when I called my wife a c--t."

I'm telling you...Obama's got to get soemthing on air fast here...many people are regarding McCain as 'not so bad'...and if they are prejudiced at the beginning here in PA, there's gong to be a problem all things being equal.

I have been posting this for days and it is NOT inconsequential in this state...believe me. Or don't...I think this is bad. Don't flame me with 'you're-a-disruptor' crap...I've been here forever...

I said the same thing during the Swiftboating and many here had a fast answer for me - that I was not to worry...uh-huh...THIS CAMPAIGN HAS TO AWAKEN HERE IN PA.

9. I think they aren't smart commercials, and here's why

Some people assume that McCain is trying to define himself and his candidacy. I disagree. It's his first big step of trying to sell the Iraq War. McCain has already said that he believes that he needs to convince the American people that he knows best about the Iraq War. This commercial actually makes the claim that the war is necessary to keep us safe here in the USA. That McCain hates war, but that this one is necessary for our national security. Stupid argument.

They had a better argument with that neo-fascist "I'll never surrender like Obama" argument. It's effective fear-mongering, it hints at Obama being unpatriotic for not wanting the USA to win in Iraq, and it skips over the whole idea of this being a poor decision to go to war and focuses on the future and not past mistakes. That's their best argument. Fear-mongering, patriotism, and victory. This commercial goes away from that and tries to convince people that the Iraq War is necessary for our national security. Even if that did become the case, that's a very hard sell to make.

into why he will keep America 'safe. That means he'll use war and he'll continue this one. It's a logical mis-step but he's not performing before a debating society...he's performing for people who operate on a 4th grade level.

16. I've seen the commercial on MSNBC

and I think it's a mistake. McCain believes that he needs to convince the American people that the Iraq War is necessary for our safety. If I was in his campaign, I wouldn't go with this line of attack. I would use the fear-mongering, patriotism, and "I won't surrender but Obama will" line of attack. That would obviously work the best, even if it is dirty and underhanded. If McCain tries to stay above the fray, then he might as well just pack his bags and go back to his Senate seat. I think most right-wingers believe this as well, that McCain needs to do some serious fear-mongering and patriotism attacks on Obama in order to be successful.

like millions of Americans will -- I'd be open to voting for him. War hero, understands the horror of war, wants to end it. That's how I'd read it, and I'm assuming that's how they want people to read it.

That last quote in the ad sums up the McCain camp's philosophy on selling the war to the American people, that it is necessary to keep us safe. This is the first step in that direction. I just seriously think that this will fail. As a Dem, I would be more fearful of McCain attacking Obama with fear-mongering, patriotism, and "Obama will surrender". That would be much more effective than profiling McCain as a war president, even if it's a compassionate war president. McCain hasn't read Bush's signals. Bush is at least somewhat likely to bomb Iran sometime before he leaves office. As the media drumbeat about Iran grows, people will be sick of war and turned off by a war President.

This echoes those other talking points that have already been planted and nurtured over the past six months. That is an aspect many here don't notice -- that the seeds were planted long ago that have now grown to support and help people believe these later ones. Since most of us did not see or dismissed those earlier ones, we can't understand why the newer one is believed at all or why how it could resonate.

PC, I too have been warning about this for a long time and that some of the things Obama glossed over in his books now pose greater risks than they might have earlier.

23. With a rooftop antennae, we're able to pick up stations from the Pittsburgh PA, Steubenville OH, and

Wheeling WV area---upper Ohio Valley, in other words. For the past week or so, stations hereabouts have been carrying McCain campaign ads . . . but I didn't pay any attention at all to what was said.

Earlier today, however, there was a McCain ad wherein he mentioned something about his plan for energy independence and a balanced budget (among other things) . . . but if he said anything about war or Iraq, I didn't catch it because I was busy in the kitchen and still not really paying attention.

So . . . :shrug:



Edited to add: I have no idea what station carried the ad because, as usual, the TV was turned on with nobody actually watching it. Ba-a-ad habit!
