Bush Fired Karl Rove During Church To Avoid Scene

Fired and brimestone

If you’re going to fire someone, you want to make sure you do it in a place where the now-unemployed can’t make a scene.

You know…a place like, say, a church.

That, according to a new book – “Machiavelli’s Shadow” – by former Time magazine reporter Paul Alexander, is where President George W. Bush informed trusted advisor Karl Rove in 2007 that his services would no longer be needed at the White House.

“On a Sunday in midsummer, George W. Bush accompanied Karl Rove to the Episcopalian Church Rove sometimes attended,” writes Alexander. “They made their way to the front of the congregation. Then, during their time in the church, Bush gave Rove some stunning news. ‘Karl,’ Bush said, ‘there’s too much heat on you. It’s time for you to go.’”

Maybe Bush knew what he was doing in breaking such bad news in such serene atmosphere: As Alexander documents, Rove has quite the temper.

"He's got a temper and a loud voice and he used it," said Bill Miller, a consultant who worked for and against Rove in Texas. "He's known for getting hot. There are buttons people know about. Losing and getting screwed with will upset him in a hurry."

CQ's Craig Crawford recalls this moment from 1999, when Crawford was editing National Journal's Hotline: "I thought Bush was called Bush Junior," Crawford told Alexander. "So, at Hotline, because we needed a device in our headlines to delineate him from Bush Senior, we were just calling him Bush Junior. Well, one day I picked up the phone and there was this person screaming at me on the other end. It was just nonstep yelling. It was Karl Rove and I mean he tore my head off over our calling Bush Bush Junior."

"Machiavelli's Shadow" doesn't portray Rove in a favorable light and Alexander includes plenty of interviews with GOP notables unsatisfied with Rove's influence during the Bush administration.

"Every Republican I know looks at the Bush administration as a total failure," said Matt Towery, chairman of Newt Gingrich's political organization.

“To do what he did politically to us is unforgivable," Rep. Tom Tancredo told Alexander. "It will take generations to recover. I don't know how long; maybe never."

1. Oh, Rove still has a job
I'd put money on it. It's nice and on the down-low.

8.  The Book hits the bookshelves tomorrow!
Which gives the public and the author time to digest it when
he does the talk show circuit way before the election

Product Description
Karl Rove has come to personify scorched earth political tactics and merciless, win-at-any-cost trickery. His status as the so-called architect behind Bush’s election victories has elevated him to a mythic kingmaker in the national imagination. Not since Mark Hanna, special assistant to President William McKinley, has someone not elected to public office played such a vital role in the governance of our nation.

We know the myth, but who is the man? In Machiavelli's Shadow, the full, unvarnished truth about the mastermind of the Bush administration is revealed as swirling scandals and Karl Rove's diminished power have freed people to speak candidly as never before. Acclaimed author and veteran journalist Paul Alexander tracks Rove's journey from consummate outsider to presidential consigliere, conducting firsthand interviews with A-list sources who have never gone on the record about Rove before now. The result is a gripping, no-holds-barred account of the man whose insistence on politicizing any area on which he has advised the president—from the war in Iraq to domestic issues like Social Security, energy, the environment, and hotly controversial judicial matters—has brought about his own fall from grace and an escalating crisis within the government and the nation.

Drawing on the author's extensive connections in the political arena and delving into all areas of Rove's life—political, business, psychological, and personal—this book stands as the definitive portrait of one of the most fascinating figures ever to emerge on the American political scene.

GOP is just an evil cult that needs to be replaced with a different kind of conservative party, one that actually recognizes the Constitution. Maybe the Democratic Leadership Council will step up to the plate and get the fuck out of our party.

31. That's the absolute hands-down sweetest part. He was the guy gushing about a
"Great Political Realignment" - a Third-Reich-style reign of decades and decades for the republi-CON party. Total dominance for several generations. Looks like he may get a political realignment alright. A Democratic/liberal/center-left realignment. I ardently hope that this happens, because we have SO much to fix, such a colossal mess to clean up - it may take decades.

It's the PERCEPTION, guys. As kkkarl's vaunted "The Architect" identity becomes more and more tarnished and diminished, he will take on added toxicity. He'll be so radioactive he'll have to be buried in a nuclear waste dump after he dies. And also, never forget or hesitate to include the line "bush's brain." It packs the additional punch of adding the name "bush" to what is turning out to be a most unfavorable and unsavory title. ANY AND ALL NEGATIVES that can be attached, inferred, suggested, and/or implied to either the rove brand OR the bush brand - and yes, they ARE brands. Marketed, pre-packaged, pasteurized-process cheese-food-product BRANDS. The worse and more unappetizing they sound and seem, THE BETTER FOR US.

WE on the other hand, are building some very good brand loyalty among younger voters and first-time voters. I know a whole slew of them myself, and they're ALL on the Obama bandwagon, and they're on it enthusiastically. What advertisers and marketers and PR people believe is that if you secure brand loyalty young, it's highly probable that said loyalty will be life-long. Cigarette manufacturers and advertisers recognized that with all their cartoony ads and fun colors and chic young sexy models of both genders. WE DEMOCRATS are doing it now, thanks to Barack Obama. Probably why his internet campaign has been so successful - it meets the younger demographics where they congregate en masse, and in a VERY inexpensive way! There are more people registering on the D side, and more of them are younger. So we're bulking up already. That is a double win for us - a plus for us and a simultaneous minus for the GOP. Those are voters the republi-CONS are NOT picking up.

At any rate, build the PERCEPTION: kkkarl rove = BAD! VERY BAD!!! The "EEUUUWWW! Factor" at work. You attach bush's name to that whole meme and you reinforce bush = BAD!!! VERY VERY BAD!!!!!!!!

14. Thanks for posting. I love this kind of insider information that
makes sense of things that don't make sense. My feeling about Rove's place in the Bush administration was that of two jock coaches, him and Bush, playing a game of some kind of political sports. They had a playbook that they felt would keep their team winning. There was no consideration about anything but moving their players on a field to achieve a goal. Of course in their game the rules can be changed, or even ignored if they can get away with it. Cheating is part of their game. When they started losing in spite of the cheating like most cheaters do, Bush had to cut his assistant coach loose. Of course, Rove wouldn't go easily hence the need to do this in a public place. I hope when Bush gets his summons for trial for war crimes, it's in a place, like a Church, where the SS can't stop the server without causing a scene.

42. Puhleease, Bush was the Repug wet dream, he did everything they dreamed about.
Their philosophy and practices lead directly to failure and disgrace and bankruptcy when enthusiastically applied. As my father used to say before corporate media brainwashing and male menopause turned him into a Repug, Roosevelt saved the Repugs and greedy business people from their own worse behavior.

Bush's grandfather Prescott and a bunch of those other assholes who conspired to bring down the government and supported Hitler should have had their heads chopped off on the Mall so the rest of their psychopathic friends would get a nice zero tolerance message. Psychopaths have no conscience so will only control their impulses under threat of harsh punishment.

I don't generally believe in capital punishment as it gets unfairly applied to poor and minority people. However I'm willing to make an exception for rich criminal Repugs.
