Conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart believes that this is precisely the wrong tack for the Republican Party to take. He complained to the hosts of Fox & Friends, "John McCain is also doing this. ... It's the Republican Party that does the damage control for the Democrats, and I think that they think that in return, they'll start being treated nicely by the people who have viciously attacked them for the last seven years."
"The Republican Party is clearly unliked in this country, according to the polls," Breitbart explained. "I would say that is because the mainstream media has hit at them day in and day out, saying that they're cruel, they're out of touch. And so what has happened is that both the Bush administration and the McCain camp are out there finding excuses."
Fox morning talker Steve Doocy whined about being called a "hate-monger" for criticizing Obama's "experience or voting record." (Of course, a more reasonable observer would note that no one was accused of racism for pointing out Obama's liberal ranking from National Journal, while the candidate has faced some truely vicious, race-based attacks during the campaign.)
"Well that's from the McCain camp," Breitbart said, warning that such accusations would not be greeted kindly by the conservatives McCain needs to win in November.
"We'll just sit back and we will watch, and we'll see what happens on election day," he said.
Breitbart clearly would like to see the Republicans wage a more hard-hitting campaign, but he expressed a fear that anyone who tries to use issues like the Reverend Wright controversy against Obama is going to be undercut by McCain himself. "The supporters of McCain who are trying to find a rationale to support him are going to be attacked by McCain," he stated, "saying that that's dirty politics, pointing out a man's history."
