Sick people used like laboratory rats in GM trials
Edited on Sun Mar-04-07 02:17 PM by nosmokes
elsewhere there's a thread i started about monsanto losing a patent challenge. but since stuff like this is SOP w/ them, me, i don't see why we allow them to operate at all. at some point don't you use up all your mulligans and gimmes and get booted outta the game?

Sick people used like laboratory rats in GM trials

By Geoffrey Lean, Environment Editor
Published: 04 March 2007

Genetically modified potatoes developed by Monsanto, the multinational biotech company, have been fed to sick patients in an experiment. Rats that ate similar potatoes in the research suffered reductions in the weight of their hearts and prostate glands.

Dr Michael Antoniou, reader in molecular genetics at Guy's, King's and St Thomas' School of Medicine, said use of humans was "irresponsible and totally unethical, especially when already ill subjects were enrolled. These people truly were guinea pigs." Other scientists said the trials were too short, on too few people, to give meaningful results of long-term effects.

Monsanto said the vegetables were safe, and the researchers conducting the experiment said effects on the rats were within "permissible" limits.

The experiment is described in a hitherto unpublished report by the Nutrition Institute of the Russian Academy of Medical Science, done "by agreement with Monsanto Company" in 1998.

1. Aside from this, we're all Guinea pigs for the new chemicals introduced yearly,
and the untested combinations they produce with the other thousands of chemicals that came before.

What fun!

8. So true
the frightening failure of protecting health by the chemical industry is the perfect example of why GM anything should be stopped in its tracks.

2. OMG, kick!! (I am too new to recommend, but others pls. do!)
BTW, why can't Monsanto be charged with reckless endangerment, or a similar charge? Any UK legal eagles on board?

You've probably been eating these potatos for years. They've been on the market a while. Why don't you sue?

7. If it's horribly immoral and constitutes murder and torture to
use animals in any research, even if painless, then what do people expect??? OF COURSE the humans will have to serve as "guinea pigs", and if they are harmed or even killed, too bad. Real guinea pigs must never be used in research.

14. well, in our system, death itself is "permissible"
as a side effect of some drugs. Viagra, for example. (And THAT should be a major clue as to how fucked up our priorities are as a society.)

They remind me far too much of Nazi medical experimenters. Far too much.
