High food prices here to stay?
Read about it here:

http://money.cnn.com/2008/05/29/news/food_prices.ap/index.htm?postversion=2008052907

What gets me is the U.S. government pays millions out to big farming corporations every year to "NOT" grow crops! I know wheat farmers in my area that make more 100's of thousands of dollars each year to leave their fields empty, and yet we have a need for more food all over the world to help feed the hungry. Why not do away with the subsidies, and put more food on the world markets so that prices would drop? Or maybe that's the idea, keep the food off the market so prices will stay sky high and big corporate framers can make huge profits on what they do grow, and more profits on "NOT" growing crops that the world needs!

2. that's not what's making prices higher right now though
It's the oil price--which raise gasoline prices. My bill at the grocery store has gone up at the same rate that gas prices have. It's really depressing to do the weekly shopping now. And prices never seem to go down. If and when gas prices drop, food will probably stay high, just because it's already there and people are paying.

4. I agree oil is a key factor
But supply and demand is also. No supply because farmers aren't producing food, and the price goes up. Or as with oil, create your own "lack" of supply and prices go up.

5. Higher food prices will change some habits, just like higher gas prices.

We've been changing some eating habits at our house just for health reasons, so we've been eating more vegs and less meat for the last year or so. Fortunately we're empty nesters, I really feel for young families with kids at home.

9. we have too
We'd already cut way back on meat (it's healthier) and eating smaller portions. But what do you do when vegetables and fruits are so high.

We are also empty nesters, but Saturday we're entertaining 14 family members for a simple cook-out, and it's hard! I'll be grilling some chicken drumsticks (big package for $6) and some hot dogs and making some simple salads and things. Some people are bringing food too.

No expensive cuts of meat this time, and we're making as many homemade things as we can. No pimentos for the potato salad--one tiny jar was 79 cents! This is an example of things we are trimming back on. We'll still eat, but without the bells and whistles we'd been enjoying the last few years when the kids finally left home and we could spend a little more on fancier items.

7. high prices are the plan.. deregulation, the Milton Friedman school of economic oppression of the
is a plan to let the markets "NATURALLY" find their own levels.. that level is designed to make maximum profits for
Faso- Corporatists regardless of how many starve.. it is time to recognize the speculators and their puppet masters, the Corporatists for what they are. "MENTALLY ILL", THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE SOCIOPATHS,, they need to be held responsible for the consequences of their actions.

8. They're not only here to stay, they're going to get much worse
because the fuel prices we're seeing at the pump are going to take another three to five years to work their way all through the economy.

It takes fuel to run farm machinery, to store, to transport, to process, and to package our food. Increases are being felt at every step of the process.

100% of what we're going to see is directly attributable to stupid fiscal policies from conservatives, policies that have nearly bankrupted the government, caused our industry to be looted and moved offshore, and dropped the value of the dollar.

Their stupid fiscal policies include the suppression of wages, something that has been the case since liberals went out of power in 1969. Wages never caught up in purchasing power to the OPEC inflation of the 1970s. They're lagging far behind the inflation we have today and will continue to do so until every last conservative is out of our government.

So get used to it people. Bend over and enjoy the reaming, because your government isn't going to do a damned thing about it until you're angry enough to threaten the lot of them with the loss of their own comfortable livings.

Remember, liberals were the only ones who were able to run an economy that worked for 90% of the country. Conservatives have fouled it up for even their favored group, the richest 10%.
