2. There are many legitimate uses for explosives.
If the purchaser has the proper licensure and permits, what's the problem?

3. The stuff is called tannerite.
tannerite.com, for what its worth.

I suspected as much, but typed the beginning of the company shipping policy shown on the video into google for confirmation:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22we+ship+in+low+profile+packaging+boxes+to+prevent+unwanted+attention%22

I am familiar with it through reading, but have never bought or used the stuff. Many of the explosions on the video especially the last one, were augmented with a flamable substance, and when you read on the website what the chemical engineer has to say, the understanding of how the stuff works will confirm as much. I urge everyone to read what he says here:

tannerite.com/she_exploding_targets.html

The news report, while nicely done for shock value, is quite misleading. The explosions in the video, toward the end for example. The news report claims that mcveigh used amonium nitrate to blow up the murrah federal building, which is true, but he didn't use tannerite, he used a mixture of ammonium nitrate and deisel fuel, which is a completely different and far more powerful animal than tannerite. The explosion that the news guy set up which sent sent the 20 pound plastic barrel 25-30 feet in the air is another example. I can remember doing the same thing back in the day to a steel barrel, with old school silver salutes, and years later with the original m-80, and having it go at least 30 feet in the air.

Being alarmed about this stuff is everyones perogative, but if your going to be alarmed, be alarmed based on fact, rather than being misled by the sensationalistic video linked in the OP.

6. Yeah, definitely.

Your welcome. Knowledge is power, as they say. I wouldn't have known what the stuff was myself, were it not for my interest in firearms and target shooting/marksmanship. Its just not stuff that a person would know about outside that arena, if you get my meaning.

I'd say its easily as dangerous as some fireworks, maybe moreso, but not by alot I don't think. I could see where it could be misused, but to trigger the stuff, you basically have to shoot it with a gun, or have a specialized device as they used when they demonstrated the stuff in the video. It ain't anfo (Amonium Nitrate Fuel Oil), but its most definitely not a toy iether.

They talk a bit about its properties at the link I posted.

7. I had to check it out.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4sSYWa-h4BQ&feature=related

Thats 35 pounds of the stuff exploding at the link above.

Pretty big boom, but I think 35 pounds of black powder in the correct container would dwarf it.

Yeah, its an explosive, but its not the thing the news report makes it out to be.

What makes it popular to the gun nuts (I suppose I'm a gun nut) is that it explodes when shot, making for a neat exploding target. I don't expect people who are not firearms enthusiasts will understand the attraction (one which I don't share, but I do understand), but I don't fault them for it.
