Chicago has highest gas prices in U.S. So I don't want to hear it
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-gas-prices-web-may19,0,2755002.story

CAMARILLO, Calif. - A national survey says the average price for regular gasoline rose about 17 cents in the last two weeks, with the highest price in Chicago at $4.07 a gallon.

The average price of self-serve regular gasoline on Friday was $3.79 a gallon. Mid-grade was at $3.91, and premium was $4.02. That's according to the Lundberg Survey of 7,000 stations nationwide released Sunday.

For the first time, the survey found average prices for regular gas surged above $4 a gallon in two metropolitan areas: Chicago and on Long Island in New York.

1. Interesting that the west coast doesn't have the highest prices this time around
What is behind this trend, I wonder.
California and NW Washington always seemed to have the highest gas prices, in the past.

2. Chicago is weird

The price is higher by just enough so that people won't bother driving to Indiana or Wisconsin to get a cheaper fill-up.

9. The story contradicts you.
The story is about averages, not particular highs and lows.

The gas station down the street from me is currently at $4.49 for regular, for example. (http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-gas-prices-web-may19,0,7796647.story)

6. Hey, over the weekend I paid $3.56 a gallon for my fill up.
Well, OK, that was with a 10-cent supermarket discount. Still, some stations list $3.66 without discounts. On the other hand, when I went to the nearest station for a gallon for my lawnmower, I paid $3.85.

But I expect to be paying over $4 soon.

7. $4.079 as of 2:45PM CST - Far West Suburb of Chicago

In a town with no public transportation (trains or buses). Fortunately for us, my DH works from home 3 days/wk, and drives to the neighboring town to catch the train in to the city the other two. And thank GOD we got rid of that freaking Buick "suckgaslikewater" Rendezvous!

ETA: That was for the cheap stuff, btw.

16. It's "Reformulation" Time...
I'm out in the NW burbs...I've been going across the county line into Kane County to save a few pennies, but even there the prices have jumped nearly 20 cents in the past two weeks. This is also the time of the year we changeover from winter to summer gas...and I'm sure that has something to do with why our prices are higher than in areas that don't have to deal with this dog and pony show.

The regular price out this was was $4.04 yesterday, but the ethanol one was a bargain...only $3.95...and then watch out for your carbeurator.

Cheers...
