Were Bill Clinton's victories in the South an aberration?

This might be a stupid question, but I only ask because you had the Southern Strategy forty years ago, now you have the Democratic party either writing off or having to push the black vote really hard to put Southern states in play...but in between that Bill Clinton captured several Southern states in 92 (LA, GA, KY, TN, AR obviously) and 96 (LA, AR, FL, KY, TN).

So what gives? What was he able to do different? Especially given how demonized he is on the Right.

For the purposes of disclosure I am an Obama supporter, but I still like Bill.

I'd vote for her if she were the nominee, but I'm an Obama supporter. I kinda wish she'd wrap up her campaign.

3. Obviously because he was something none of the current candidates are

...a Southerner. He was also a fine politician, effective speaker and backed by a superbly organized campaign apparatus. George H. W. Bush failed to measure up in any of the categories, and Bob Dole...was Bob Dole.
