"I have to vote Republican, my husband works in the oil industry."
Teacher at my work and I were talking about the coming election. She knows where I stand, and she stated she would never vote for anyone but a Republican. When I mentioned what has been going on in this country the past 7 years, she just shrugged her shoulders. "My husband works in the oil industry. We have to vote Republican."

She also mentioned her husband voted in the Dem primary here in Texas only to vote against Clinton. She laughed when she said this, and of course he would be voting McCain in the general.

So, one wonderful post mentioned how Republicans put themselves above country. This is a perfect example. Selfishness and greed is the mantra of Bush Republicans, and this woman is living proof of it. What's scary is that there are many more out there just like her. Especially here in Red Hell.

1. Sounds like the religious fanatics who "had to vote for Bush"
Because their ministers/pastors/priests told them they had to.

I suppose oil is not that far removed from God these days...

2. I receive payments from oil companies and don't feel any need to vote republican because of it.

4. Same here, I don't understand that mindset, at all
It seems to be an exclusively selfish one that sees only its own immediate, short term benefit as paramount.

My stocks did much better under Democrats than under GOP lunatics. I don't mind paying higher taxes, I can afford them. I would much rather pay higher taxes and live in a more civil society than we have now. I would much rather pay higher taxes in a country that entitles ordinary people to hope.

That means I will never vote for the aristocracy obsessed GOP.

9. You don't have to change party to vote in the other party's primary in Texas

12. Wow. How did the parties on that?
I would have thought that both parties would be equally afraid of the mischief it could cause.

16. Before Texas was a two party state it was in the Democrats interest to let them vote in the primary
instead of recruiting better candidates. It now works the other way in many parts of Texas were there is a one party system, if you don't vote in the GOP primary your only say in who wins is being part of the 11% supporting the Democrat. But the last eight years it has gotten much better, particularly the last 4 or so.

6. What Is Our Oil Industry Going to Do After The Repiggies Have Pissed Off Every Oil-Producing Country
Sending in the Army doesn't seem to be working all that well, and we can't afford it anyway.

Our oil industry may find itself without much oil to pump at this rate.

10. Geez...
Ask her if the oil industry collapsed under Clinton's presidency. What does she think will happen to the oil companies if a Democrat becomes president. It's hardly likely that we will suddenly become energy independent, that we will no longer need oil for anything.

What does she think will happen under a Democratic president? Chances are, she won't be able to name one single thing that would be different than now. Maybe we'll be lucky and get some better CAFE standards but the oil industry will not suffer one bit.

11. She couldn't name one thing
I think it's a bit of a cover. You just don't vote "Democrat" in these parts if you've been voting Republican all your life. Even if things are in the shitter.

13. Meanwhile, while they say they could "Never vote Democrat" (sic)
They lambaste us for "blindly voting the party line."

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

14. In other words, "I like to vote only what is good for me, everyone else can just fall off a cliff"
What a disease.

18. You should remind her that
who she votes for is between her and the ballot box/voting machine. She has an absolute right to cast her ballot in private and without anyone knowing who she supported.
