As Losses Mount, GOP Begins Looking in the Mirror
Since losing 30 seats and their 12-year stranglehold on power in 2006, House Republicans have kept asking themselves the same question: Can it get any worse?
. . .
With lots of help from Washington -- including more than $1.3 million in campaign cash and a last-minute visit by Vice President Cheney -- Mississippi Republicans are desperately trying to retain a congressional seat in one of the most reliably conservative districts in the nation.
The stakes in the 1st District special election couldn't be higher, strategically or symbolically. . . ."
OK, so the GOP is under pressure to defend a Congressional seat in a very conservative district where they stand to lose.
OK, so (not in the posted snippet) they have been spending money on a lot of nasty attack adds which both attempt to tie the democratic candidate to Obama, and also distort Obama's political positions. That's standard GOP tactics, it's what we expect from them; it's how they operate; it's part of what, over time has begun to discredit them even among their supporters. We can understand that, and maybe even take it in stride and hope to beat them anyway.
But, here they are locked in this tight contest that they see as a high stakes battle to hold their own ground, so which political heavy weight do they pull in to try to pull them out of this mess at the last minute?
Dick Cheney!!!!!
Dick Cheney of the 14% approval rating????
OK, so his approval rating is probably somewhat higher in the 1st district of Mississippi? Can it really be high enough to actually help any Republican i9n any contested election anywhere this year?
