In Memory of Sapphire Blue
Sapphire Blue's daughter, Indigo, posted a thread earlier this evening in her mother's name. I know that many Duers have been wondering where Sapphire Blue has been lately and we, very sadly, learned in that thread that she passed away last year, right after Thanksgiving. Here is the thread if you want to read it and leave a message for Indigo. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5908505

I know there are many, many DUers who loved Sapphire Blue and admired her tireless efforts on behalf of the poor. My heart goes out to all of you. She has been missed and will be missed for a long time.

I found an old thread in which Katinmn posted a poem for Sapphire Blue several years ago. I thought I'd repost that poem here. (I hope Kat won't mind. Here's the original thread. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=106&topic_id=27974 )

The weary warrior’s eyes glazed
contemplative or angry
I could not tell
with me no longer

Weary
she said
Simply weary
too much anger
so little change
a thousand wounds
a blog for every wrong
ten mittened fingers for a hundred weeping dikes
no answer blowing in some long forgotten wind

Cries for justice dissonant
rhythm less
language sans syntax
one vote one veto
Nations united for commerce
oil for food to nourish cannon fodder for the machine
marching us ever forward to our doom

Ten mittened fingers for a thousand weeping dikes
no answer blowing in some long forgotten wind

I wished to lift her up
carry her home
To say on eagle’s wings brought more remembering
of mercury
still more than all the world allows
And DDT
feathered first people dancing in the desert

A journey of a thousand miles
ends while its beginning
turn turn turning in the wind

Here and here and here she thrusts and parries
The Patriot Act
Iran Iraq
Katrina Katrina
Her winds lay bare the weakened levies
the heart of health care
poverty
equal rights
now decimal points
not points of light
Here a phantom
There a blog
Here a demi-god
saying the sanctity of heterosexual
is worth going to war for

St Joan and Mother Courage long forgot
This new created Lorna Doone fights on
Search through the countless headless windmills
necromancer politicians and their pals create
openly enticing us to lose our brotherhood to hate

Thrust and parry
thrust and parry
she can not stop to rest
Thrust and parry
Thrust and parry
Working for the brightness at its best
Ten mittened grasping caring fingers
carry on the fight

--Jeff McCallum

Rest in Peace, Sapphire Blue. You fought the good fight and you were deeply loved and respected here.

Rest in Peace, dear Sapphire. You were a beautiful gem, for sure.

75. I know. I know. It is so brutally sad to think she is gone
I once emailed her to ask why she had chosen the lovely "Sapphire Blue" as her DU user name.

She related how she had stumbled upon a meditation involving thinking and visualizing on the color Blue and how this had helped her deal with her liver ailments. At one point, it reduced them or perhaps even removed them. (This was after Doctors had told her nothing could be done for her.)

She was so joyous in the way she related the tale. I will always remember the joy she conveyed to me.

And also her honest anger and concern for the horrible things that have gone on in this country's once fine name.

So I dedicate this to her, a beautiful farewell tribute to Iz (Israel Kamakawiwo'ole) who sang Over The Rainbow. I know Sapphire Blue's voice has joined his now to sing of the beauty one can find, if the heart seeks it.

85. I love that song too
but not his version since he messes up the lyrics as I know them from Oz. Iz reminded me of the Hawaiian guy in the movie Shallow Hal, but I guess he died before that was made. Kinda funny though as I was just skimming through the movie and as Hal and Gwyneth sit down on their first date the jukebox is playing "Over the Rainbow" but I don't think it's his version, nor the Oz version.

59. Sapphire Blue was, by turns, gentle, enraged, monumentally discouraged, happy...
and all the other emotions that go with being a prophet.

And a prophet she was! Many of her threads sunk with hardly a whimper, because she took up an unpopular, unsexy cause.

Sometimes they were noticed and supported, and that made her happy.

Towards the last, she was even mocked and villified, yes, dear ladies and gents, right here at DU, she was mocked for her anger at poor folk being ignored.

Yes, she was ANGRY.

Many times I'd have a PM in my inbox from her, raging and asking "What do I do to get people to notice? What do I do to get people involved?"

Many times she was angry and to the point of dismissing people as hopelessly uncaring.

Many times she was discouraged and completely dishearted. BUT, she would come back and try again.

We can do no less.

You have deserved it many times over, Sapphire Blue--Rest In Peace, dear lady!

67. Sapphire Blue worked harder than anyone at DU to raise poverty awareness
I know she got frustrated sometimes, because people were most interested in or about Britney Spears than about the crushing poverty in this country, or more recently, about John Edwards' house than about his plans to address the poverty crisis.

She inspired me, and I'm sure many others here. She reminded me constantly that we are not doing enough.

She will be deeply deeply missed, and DU will feel her absence.

132. Are DUers more interested in Britney Spears than in poverty?
If not, then DU can become the bastion of poverty ACTION.

Sadly, DU is just as unconcerned as the rest of the Dem party, and the nation.

83. Thank you, pamela, for this exquisite post, and thank you to everyone who has posted here.
My mom said this was a beautiful community, and I see it reflected here; you are all so very kind!

I hope you will all take to heart one of her last requests, something she told us: "I know that you're going to miss me when I'm gone. Shed your tears, then open the door and look outside; there's a whole world that needs your attention, a whole world that needs fixing. Do whatever you can, in any way that you can, whenever you can. So many people need you desperately."

Much love and my deepest appreciation to all,

Indigo

84. For those of us who need a text right now -- a gentle one
A VALEDICTION FORBIDDING MOURNING.
by John Donne

AS virtuous men pass mildly away,
And whisper to their souls to go,
Whilst some of their sad friends do say,
"Now his breath goes," and some say, "No."

So let us melt, and make no noise, 5
No tear-floods, nor sigh-tempests move ;
'Twere profanation of our joys
To tell the laity our love.

Moving of th' earth brings harms and fears ;
Men reckon what it did, and meant ; 10
But trepidation of the spheres,
Though greater far, is innocent.

Dull sublunary lovers' love
—Whose soul is sense—cannot admit
Of absence, 'cause it doth remove 15
The thing which elemented it.

But we by a love so much refined,
That ourselves know not what it is,
Inter-assurèd of the mind,
Care less, eyes, lips and hands to miss. 20

Our two souls therefore, which are one,
Though I must go, endure not yet
A breach, but an expansion,
Like gold to aery thinness beat.

If they be two, they are two so 25
As stiff twin compasses are two ;
Thy soul, the fix'd foot, makes no show
To move, but doth, if th' other do.

And though it in the centre sit,
Yet, when the other far doth roam, 30
It leans, and hearkens after it,
And grows erect, as that comes home.

Such wilt thou be to me, who must,
Like th' other foot, obliquely run ;
Thy firmness makes my circle just, 35
And makes me end where I begun.

109. Oh my.
This one really sticks out and grabs me:

May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths, superficial relationships, so that you will live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression and exploitation of people so that you will work for justice, equality and peace.

May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation and war, so that you will reach out your hand to comfort them and change their pain into joy.

And may God bless you with the foolishness to think that you can make a difference in the world, so that you will do the things which others tell you cannot be done.

101. "Sapphire" - John Martyn
I watch the day go down
Sapphire
I watch my luck turn round
A high flyer
I threw my bones around
Sure fire
I watch the current run
Live wire
Clear blue
Too true
Clear blue
Too true.

I don't know what to do
I got no place to go
Oh the day I lost my sweet Sapphire
My precious gems are dust
There's nothing left to trust
Oh the days I'll miss sweet Sapphire.

I saw her running round
Sweet liar.
And I ran the garden path
Sweet briar
I did just what I could
So tired
I threw my keys away
With no desire
Clear blue
Too true.

I don't know what to do
I got no place to go
Oh the days I miss sweet Sapphire
My precious gems are dust
There's nothing left to trust
Oh the days I'll miss sweet Sapphire.

I got no place to go
I don't know what to do
Ooh, the dream about Sapphire
I don't know what to do
I got nowhere to go
I got no face to show without Sapphire.

My precious gems are dust
There's nothing left to trust
oh since the day I lost my sweet Sapphire
There's nothing I can trust
My precious gems are dust
Oh, the day I lost sweet Sapphire.

I don't know what to do
I don't know where to go
Oh the day I lost my sweet Sapphire.

How sad that upon hearing of her death for the first time, all I can think about is all the abuse - direct and indirect - she had to take on this site. We are so very much poorer for this loss; I wonder how many people who've said that really understand why?

What a ballsy, kick-ass, principled woman she was. R.I.P., Sapph...we'll try our best to keep the fight going for you.
