Phyllis Holden Macey (first Mrs. Bob Dole) has died...
Phyllis Holden Macey, 83, an artist, physical therapy consultant and former Fairfax County resident, died of renal failure April 22 at Pine Rock Manor assisted living facility in Warner, N.H.

Mrs. Macey came to Washington from Kansas in 1960 with her first husband, former Republican senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole, as he began serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. They settled in Fairfax County's Lake Bancroft community.

She was active in the Congressional Club, a social group for spouses of members of Congress. When she and Dole divorced in 1972 after more than 24 years of marriage, the rules were changed to allow her to continue as a club member.

The First Ladies Luncheon was one of her favorite endeavors in Washington, said her daughter, Robin Dole. "She was a great hostess and loved entertaining family and friends in her home," she said
