KO's time slot is changing on MSNBC.
Noticed today (while doing tivo management) that KO is moving to 7:00 (EST) starting Monday March 12th.

New schedule -

Tweety - 4:00 pm
Tucker - 5:00 pm
Tweety - 6:00 pm
KO - 7:00 pm
Joe - 8:00 pm
New show at 9:00 pm - Don't know if it is a news show or something else all together.

KO repeats at 11:00 pm.

So they are moving KO into Tweety's time spot. Any ideas on why they are making these changes? Does it seem like a good thing?
Will they pick up more west coast viewers?

the Daily Show. As it is, the new DS doesn't come on until MIDNIGHT, since we're on the West Coast feed to spare the children from E! and Howard Stern...

Sounds good to me. If I miss the early show, I won't have to stay up so late to see the late show.
But he'll be competing with TDS, too.

14. For the repeat this is good news
for the main showing, I'm not so sure. It's got its good points and its bad points. On the one hand, now I could watch TDS repeats at 8, I could watch AI, I could watch Ugly Betty live instead of taping it. On the other hand, I like to do my exercising after I eat and before KO. If I settle in to watch KO at 7 and am already on-line, I may get lazy and not exercise. I also think it will be difficult for some KOEBers who don't get home by 7 EST from work.

We may have to move our KOEB meetings to 11, although I really don't want to stay up until midnight every night.

Guess we'll have to play it by ear.

Edited on Fri Mar-02-07 08:51 AM by shield20
KO's ratings have been increasing while Bill's dropping since '05, but he has a long way to go:

Olberman had a .7 share, while O'Reilly a 2.1 share in Jan 2007; shoot, even BOs rerun has a .9.

Maybe they figure he can do better with a bit less competition?

I doubt very much that Billo is Keith's competition or that that figured into the decision.

92. in the DC area he is also competing with TDS & Colbert re-runs
in addition to the shows you mentioned, at 8 PM. This is important since a lot of TDS & C's would-be audience can't stay up past 11 because of work schedules. There also may be more viewers available at 7 and at 11 than at 8 and 12. Since he really is providing an alternative to the evening news on the big networks, it does make some sense to schedule him directly against them or shortly afterward.

I think he will do just great.

19. Remember GE is trying to move MSNBC Talk Shows to CNBC
and turn MSNBC into just a "Court TV for CRIME" and canned prepackaged stuff. Little Dan Abrams (Son of Big Lawyer for Judy Miller, Floyd Abrams) is the new Head and his background is "Court TV."

It was announced over a month ago...and the only reason they've delayed is maybe some FCC Problems and that KO's getting BIG RATINGS so maybe they are giving "Little Dan" a little time or it's just a business decision delayed for one reason or the other.

CNBC's Website has a Promotion and Bio of Matthews up on their website already. I'm waiting for when they put Keith up... That will signal the "transfer."

They are NOT. NBC knows they would be fools to move Keith when he has caught fire.

MSNBC is staying THE WAY IT IS.

I think this whole thing is a matter of people misunderstanding the Daylight Saving Time change. A lot of appliances (including computers and probably DVRs) will not be ready for it. Neither will we, apparently.

101. No, but you were perpetuating outdated information.
It doesn't matter how reputable the sites are from which you get your information if the information in them has since been followed up by new and contradictory information.

The business about moving Tweety and Keith to CNBC was NEVER anything more than speculation by business insiders about what kind of changes would be taking place at NBC News. It came from reputable sources, but it was still speculation, not fact. The facts turned out to be different when they were later made known by NBC. NBC had not yet "announced" anything.

32. sounds like a great thing
i would think more people can (potentially) see his show live since the tendency is to be in news/transition mode through the 7pm hour but turn to entertainment shows at 8

and if keiths ratings drop off at all they will know to switch back but i like him at the 7pm slot - too much competition at 8pm but not much at 7pm
though it cant help to surround him with those others but thats another conversation

best wishes keith

I tape the Daily at 11pm and the Olbermann repeat at 12am. (leaves the VCR free for anything I might be doing before bedtime.) Are these jerks trying to make me get rid of my vcr and just nab everything off of bittorrent? I'd have to change my taping of Olbermann to 7pm otherwise, not sure when the daily repeats go on late late at night.

Agreed that turning MSNBC into the "all crime all the time" is stupid. Just makes it look like a second-run network. Then agian, I guess they are, Olbermann is the only journalist they have.

Keith's ratings are terrible against OReilly - even BO's re-run beats him.

Me thinks you are too eager to take up for your precious O'Reilly

The LAT is the latest to come out with a glowing profile of MSNBC'c Keith Olbermann, whose ratings have been a-climbin' in recent months, contributing to and along with those of his network. Matea Gold's article hits on the Olbermann "Special Comments" excoriating the Bush administration, how his leftward tack resonated with viewers who felt unrepresented, and his gleeful attacks on Bill O'Reilly, saying that his gloves have "come off."

She notes something new, too — Olbermann, up 21% in the ratings since this time last year, is also up for contract renewal, and is in the process of negotiations with the network. The gloves seem to be somewhat off with respect to that development, as expressed in this comment:

"It is, to some degree, a perfect setup," he said of his relationship with the network. "They leave me alone, I leave them alone, and I deliver what they need, both in terms of journalism and the money end of it, the ratings."

I KNOW - i posted that earlier in the thread, but that wasn't the point! There is about a 1.4-1.7 MILLION viewer difference between Olberman and OReilly.

When you are getting about 700,000 viewers (KO) that is ALOT. When the OR re-run is getting 200,000 more then KO original, it is even worse.

O'Reilly Factor:
Total Viewers - Oct. 2006 -- 2,081,000

Countdown with Keith Olberman:
Total Viewers - Oct. 2006 -- 637,000

83. In FACT
Edited on Fri Mar-02-07 10:34 AM by shield20
OReilly's numbers in Jan 07 were up over December by around 400,000 viewers:

O'Reilly Factor Ratings For January 2007
Rating - 2.1
Total Viewers - 2,424,000

O'Reilly Factor Ratings For December 2006
Rating - 1.8
Total Viewers - 2,094,000

Again, that is HUGE increase, more then 50% of Olberman's entire viewing audience. Maybe they figure they hit a wall with Keith, and so the change? Just not sure.

EDIT: May be a TiVO thing, and not a change at all? Just saw additional post in thread, so the BO vs KO head to head may continue???...

He may be ahead in ratings, but his overall ratings have dropped and Keith's ratings have increased 21%.. It's that simple and it is a process that is ongoing as people get fed up with O'Reilly's "spin"....

63. I'm going to have to start watching the repeat later in the evening...
I'm on the West Coast and the 5PM PST has been perfect for me! I make dinner for my family and watch it at the same time....Meanwhile, if its at 4PM PST, I am still picking up kids at school etc. and can't watch....

Also, that doesn't make sense to not have him up against O'Really, unless they want to increase his viewership, thinking that those who are watching O'Really will watch KO first and thus his ratings will go way way up....

I guess for KO, the earlier time slot really is better....I know a lot of people who starting at 8PM on the East Coast are watching their favorite shows (or going to bed). This way KO gets those people...

But for us Left Coasters, it sucks....but I'll survive...

His early show will be opposite the Blitz's first hour.

The 2nd half of his later show will be opposite networks' nightly news.

I like the new times, but won't the repeat of KO be opposite The Daily Show? Or, am I reading everything backward as well?

84. I Like It...
First...I want an alternative to Lou Doobie's Xenophobia Hour and I'd rather have hot pokers inserted in my eyes than watch Bowtie Boy. Having Tweety to laugh at at 5pm (I'm in Central) can't be any worse than the Doobster. Moving KO to an hour earlier will expose him to many who pop on the prime time shows or are out for the evening. Many times I've had to go places or had a viewing conflicts that I'd either have to record KO or try to catch the replay. The 7/6 starting time works out a lot better for me, since generally I'm watching Tweety anyway.

Methinks Abrams is rolling the dice here. KO now goes up against Wolfie (Faux Noise doesn't exist on any of my televisions) while, Joey gets to go head-to-head with O'Liely...and hopefully sucks away some more Faux viewers who are leaving that network in large numbers (their viewership is 40% of what it was 2 years ago).

Overall, the time change should help boost KO's numbers higher as he doesn't have to compete against the prime time shows.

The one thing I don't like is the repeat being on at the same time as The Daily Show, Colbert & Letterman, but the earlier start time will make it easier for me to always catch the first run.

When I travel west (AZ here I come in a couple weeks) I always missed KO cause he was on at 5pm...now with the replay at 7pm...also before prime time shows.

start watching network shows at 8pm.

I think this will give him exposure to them.

And also that the Rolling Stone article and last Sunday Morning show gave him some good publicity to get people interested in checking him out.

104. Interesting Counter Programming Move
This shift does a few interesting things:

Moving Tweety to 6E/5C, he now goes up against Lou Doobies and Brit Fumes...hoping to pull away viewers from CNN (like me) who currently find Doobies the lesser of evils (I'd rather watch Home Shopping than Bowtie Boy). Tweety's ratings have been stagnant and the change gets his first airing (at 4E/3C) now goes up against the first hour of Wolfie and gets the jump on the Faux noise machine.

Moving Keith is very good. He gets out from having to "draw viewers" from O'Liely and also from conflicting with the first hour of prime time. This could attract a large younger audience who currently would opt for a network show. A big reason Keith was resigned and now is "the franchise" at the network is his ability to show steady growth with the younger demos...real gold to any network.

The most interesting move is pitting Joey against O'Lielly. What's a wingnut to do? Joe's numbers have risen along with Olbermann's and it appears Abrams is rolling the dice that he'll keep some of Olbermann's viewers as well as sucking off "conservatives" from Faux (and the remaining 4 Paula Zahn viewers...including her mom) and then force O'Leilly to go after Joey rather than Olbermann. This could be fun.

Finally, the real reason for the move. Now they can put in another hour of pre-produced prison and scandal shows for a second hour that are nothing but re-packages of NBC Dateline crap but draws viewers and advertisers. This is where they're gonna try to make the money to pay KO's new deal.
