Anyone remember being irate over much less expensive gas?
When I was in Chattanooga, I think it was 1998, I ran out of gas on the wrong side of the river and got all torn up over paying $1.12 per gallon. Seems kind of silly now.

1. George W. Bush whined that the Clinton Administration was at fault for $1.50 gas in 2000
Makes me angry to even think about it.

6. You know that somwhow
it will be the next president's fault when it goes to $4 nationwide, right? So let's not embolden the terrorists by complaining about it , huh?

2. Everything from here on out needs to be labelled "Before Bush" or "After Bush".
I remember the good old days when gas was affordable, before Bush, Cheney and the GOP fucked everything up.

3. Let's see.. Bush has managed to bring the USA to its knees and has
created a third world country. Amazing what apathy breeds.

4. I remember the 'common' people being irate with Bill Clinton for not doing
enough to lower the costs and demanding he release the reserves.

7. He did open the reserves
A month before the election to tamp down heating oil prices in swing states like Pennsylvania and New Hampshire.

5. I moved to CT from MA in 1998
I grew up in IL paying less than $1/gallon, so MA was a surprise at $1.28 or so. But I lived there for all of the 90s and it never changed much. Then in '98 I moved one state south and was horrified to pay 1.89/gallon. All of a sudden it cost almost $20 to fill my tank. $20!

I could spend that filling my motorcycle tank now.

8. No, the worst I can remember is a brief "Aw crap!" moment
when I ran out of gas and only expensive stations were near enough to get to. I always knew enough to get $5.00 there to get me to a more reasonable part of the state.

I was lucky, though, because I lived in Boston during the oil shocks in the 70s and 80s. I just went everyplace by subway.

11. I remember being horrified at having to pay $2.04 in San Francisco
It took $22 to fill up my car- the first time I'd ever spent more than $20 on a tank of gas. That was only a few years ago.

12. I remember the outrage at $1.00/gal and again @ $1.50
I remember as it approached the $2.00 mark people were putting stickers on gas pumps in reference to the republicons and bu$h being responsible.

When we hit $2.00 it seemed like everyone bent over and greased up and shut up

13. I think a DeLorean would be the most economical car right now
Get that sucker up to 88MPH and go back to those times and get some cheap gas. That flux capacitor would pay for itself in no time!!!

You know, for the extra drama.

15. I Saw More Anger Over Gas Lines & Rationing
Some of us can remember those "fun" days of 1973-74 and 78-79...not only did gas go up in price (I remember all the furor when it hit 50 cents then $1 dollar a gallon)...but it wasn't the price that got to people as much as not being able to get it. If gas stations start closing early or on Sundays...or start to ration, then watch how the anger will rise up.

24. I think they'll do that to us if a Democrat is elected.
The Bushes and the Saudis still control the U.S. oil supply. Watch them start to ration gas again as soon as a Democrat takes back the White House. Watch millions of stupid people blame the Democrats.

20. LOL, no...
At the time, if you crossed one of the bridges that spans the Tennessee River, you got into this really neat little shopping district with lots of arts/crafts stores and bookstores. It was (and hopefully still is) really cool. Unfortunately, at the time, there was only one gas station anywhere near the area and they overcharged.

21. Gas was 27 cents a gallon where I lived in 1968
Edited on Thu Apr-24-08 02:44 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
which was Savannah, Georgia,, when I had my first car. A grocery clerk barely making above minimum wage used to park in front of my house every day and he had a red 1967 Mustang fastback. Apparently, he could afford to put gas in it. Has the minimum wage gone up 15 times what it was in 1968 the way gas has? I'll bet today's minimum wage buys a lot less than it did in 1968.

23. I remember the late 1970s when OPEC colluded with the Bushes to cause a gas shortage.
People lined up for blocks to get gas. Their anger at Carter helped Reagan sweep into office in 1980. I ran out of gas on the West Virginia turnpike because all the gas stations were closed on Sunday.

Everybody blamed Carter but it was the Bushes all the time. They've been doing business with the Saudis for decades.
