Hah! Limbaugh Has More Listeners During The Commercials
They're spinning it one way, my take is different. If as they say, people are tuning into the commercials so they don't miss the beginning of a segment, why don't the ratings stay up during the segment?

Limbaugh’s Following Extends to Ads
By ALEX MINDLIN
Published: April 7, 2008

“Rush Limbaugh’s fans are at their most numerous when he is not even speaking. That is among the findings of a study by Coleman Insights, a radio consulting firm, that uses newly available minute-by-minute listener data from New York, Philadelphia and Houston to map the ebb and flow of Mr. Limbaugh’s audience.

Warren Kurtzman, the vice president of Coleman, said that Mr. Limbaugh’s audience tuned in during commercials so as not to miss the beginning of each segment. “His shares at the beginning of each hour are tremendous,” Mr. Kurtzman said.

The study also found that Mr. Limbaugh did worst during minutes in which he was expressing approval, with a 5.43 percent average share of listeners. He had 5.71 percent of listeners when expressing negative opinions and 5.81 percent when he was neutral. “People are tuning in to hear his beefs with the world,” Mr. Kurtzman said.”

(Listening to the radio and commercials are playing) "Boy, these sure are some nice commercials." (Rush Limbaugh comes on) "WHAT IS THIS!!!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, TURN IT, TURN IT NOW!!!!"

3. Advertisers
will love to hear this. Whatever I'm listening to, or watching: I always try to avoid commercials at all costs. Even more when someone says, " stay tuned."

7. True, Sadly In This Case
But maybe, his numbers are beginning to catch up with him. Ultimately, less listeners do lead to less listeners overall.

4. Here's my take,
people scan thru for a station, hear some commercials and wait to see what comes on next, Limbug opens his hole and people dive for the tuner dial.

5. Maybe the problem is that those "tuning in to the commercials"
do not realize that they're tuning in to a station where Rush is being carried. Once they find out what they're listening to, they change the channel to a station that plays less offensive crap ...

... I'll usually stop on commercials to see what the show is. That would imply that lots of people looking for something to listen to, tune out when the hear limbaugh.

15. I do the same thing. But then wouldn't all stations show a ratings increase during commercials?
Or is it just Lamebags show?

12. Ever notice who OxyRush's advertisers are?

It's comical really and it tells a lot. He has a used lumber yard that's a regular advertiser and a gold buying scammer is another and there are others that are just as funny but I can't think of the specifics right now as I'm not a frequent listener. He might even have a sponsor for Oxycontin so that he can get a discount bulk rate.

13. awww. that's an easy one
to understand:

the listeners do tune in early and catch the beginning of the segment and Limbaugh establishes his position very early and quickly in his monologue, after that he is incredibly predictable in his comments/show flow:

outrage
outrage
outrage
liberal democrats are to blame
outrage
outrage
outrage
liberal democrats are to blame
outrage
commercial break
phone calls
caller outraged
limbaugh agrees
caller outraged
limbaugh corrects
caller outraged
and on and on.

once he gets rolling he becomes boring, monotonous and (as I said above) predictable and the only thing worse that him, is listening to callers.

14. I wonder how many are planted
the call usually echos his sentiments. Any and all opposing viewpoints are summarily ridiculed and dismissed, with you guessed it,...outrage! He's a pig of the lowest denominator.

20. planted?
no. heavily screened? hell yes.

But that's really no different than any talk show. you want people talking on topic not about their pet issue.

think "theater of the absurd" when thinking about Limbaugh.

16. his lying drug smacking mug is plastered on the side of our city buses
and every time I pass. I am so tempted to get a sharpie or can of spray paint and do a big speech bubble and filling it in with some ugly truth about his drug use and his sex vacations, and failed marriages and anti worker, anti person spew - the bus security people are all over and I would be so busted, but I am fairly sure I wouldn't lose my job, and my husband would think it was funny, immature, but funny. My daughter would be mortified, so I resist. But it would be almost worth it.

22. There's another piece of spin there. They say his ratings drop when
he's expressing approval of something, and rise when he's expressing disapproval.

They interpret that to mean that his audience is tuning in to hear him complain about the world, I that's so vague as to be meaningless. A more accurate description would be that they're tuning *out* when he starts "carrying water" (to quote Limbaugh himself) for his deeply unpopular party hacks.

Politics aside, Limbaugh is a very good radio man. The same can't be said for most of his callers. This is my general rule of thumb for any talk radio show, I enjoy the host's segments, but I'm not a big fan of listening to people stumble over their opinions when they call in.

EDIT: honestly, when I do listen to talk radio, I do tune in a minute or so early. The first segment of the hour is usually the best.
