Even British Victorian authors hated current republicans.
Edited on Wed Feb-28-07 02:40 PM by Goblinmonger
I am teaching British Lit for the first time in many years next year, so I decided to get a head start on the novel we have as summer reading, Silas Marner since I need to prepare a study packet for the kids do so for the first day next fall. I read the book in high school, but not since.

Any way, to make a long story short, I just got done reading the line that is not my signature line and knew that there would be people here that would find the reference in a Victorian novel to a current republican shrew quite hilarious.

Enjoy.

On edit: fixed my italics *headslap*

1. she wasn't the only one
From "Moby Dick", chapter 1, where Ismael muses on signing up on a whaler:

"And, doubtless, my going on this whaling voyage, formed part of the grand programme of Providence that was drawn up a long time ago. It came in as a sort of brief interlude and solo between more extensive performances. I take it that this part of the bill must have run something like this:

"GRAND CONTESTED ELECTION FOR THE PRESIDENCY OF THE UNITED STATES.
"WHALING VOYAGE BY ONE ISHMAEL.
"BLOODY BATTLE IN AFFGHANISTAN."

I haven't read Silas Marner since high school either, but I still remember the furze bushes!

3. Not to mention contemporary British children's authors:
(small spoiler for Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy (now being filmed!), but nothing vital):

Mrs. Coulter ... is an almost purely evil character. Despite her charming and persuasive demeanor, Mrs. Coulter is the greediest, most power-hungry character in the trilogy. Her daemon, a vicious little golden monkey, reflects its owner’s personality. Just as the monkey enjoys torturing and killing bats ... Mrs. Coulter enjoys toying with people before she kills them. She shows no remorse after tearing people to pieces or torturing them to death. For much of the trilogy, Mrs. Coulter is associated with the Church, where she heads up the General Oblation Board, the organization that kidnaps children in order to perform dastardly experiments on them.

warning: a few more spoilers at this link
