It's My Right to Have Kid, Pregnant Man Tells Oprah
Transgender Man Says He Kept Uterus Intending to Become Pregnant

Thomas Beatie, a former woman who is now a pregnant man, defended his decision today to have a baby, saying he has a "right to have a biological child."

Despite removing his breasts, growing a wispy beard and legally having his gender changed from female to male, Beatie, 34, kept his female sex organs intact because he hoped to have a child some day.

After years of struggling with his sexual identity and deciding to live as a man, he did the most womanly thing possible -- he became pregnant.

In an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey, Beatie said his lifelong desire to have children motivated him to use his still working female reproductive organs when he learned that Nancy, his wife of five years, was unable to conceive.

19. The pronoun you meant to use was "him"
The man in question is legally male, therefore "him" is the appropriate choice.

6. Interesting.
You hear about more men who change to women than women who change to men. I hope his/her kid is born without complications and Thomas and his/her wife have a happy marriage despite the inevitable bullshit from people who don't get it.

8. Has this guy's story been confirmed?
He really was a woman who went through gender reassignment?

Because I was thinking it was a hoax. Like that cult who claimed they cloned somebody.

9. Why?
If the gender change didn't include doing anything to the sex organs, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. It sounds like all he/she changed was more body hair/no breasts.

10. I'm not saying it's not possible.
But it got some local news here in Oregon, and they interviewed the neighbor and I got the suggestion that it was some sort of prank.

25. His doctor was on Oprah, and they showed him getting an ultrasound
It's a true story. He was taking testosterone up until two years before he got pregnant. His reproductive organs are intact - but he has the chest of of a man (surgery and hormones) and other male characteristics (facial hair, deeper voice, etc)... genitally, he still has a vagina but his clitoris is now, in his words, a small penis.

Not saying there are not rights to be had but when you claim your a man yet have and use female sex organs it gets a bit gray..

29. grey hell
a female who had a double mastectomy and took hormones until two years ago gets pregnant and people are hopping around like it is a fucking miracle.

she may dress as a man, act like a man, think like a man, and even be legally recognized (for some weird reason) as a man, but she is physically female. So it is no big surprise that when her wife injected sperm into her female organs it did what it often does in those circumstances.

this is a bullshit non-story

but the REAL story is that they got married - all legal and everything. Didn't need to have their privates inspected. She just said "I'm the husband" and they got married. Not a "same-sex" marriage - just a marriage. Pretty much sets a precedent, doesn't it?

Gays should just go apply for marriage licenses and get married. Just leave the box unchecked where you say male or female. Put "none of your damned business."
If that doesn't work, then just lie.

cause birth defects, most likely ambiguous genitalia.

17. This is a non story
Look, this person is biologically a woman. "He" has all female innards. Now if a man goes through surgery, becomes a woman, and THEN has a baby, THEN you have a story.

18. This is actually a lot more common then you might think.
People on the trans male spectrum have been doing this for years. There was an article in a local GLBT newspaper about FTM spectrum folks becoming pregnant a while back.

Quite a few years ago, Patrick Califia (transgender author) and his partner at the time (also a trans man) had a child together, and his partner was the one who became pregnant. http://www.villagevoice.com/news/0025,califia-rice,15833,1.html

I'm sure they weren't the first either.

There's a whole world of gender and sexuality out there that a lot of straight cisgender folks don't even really consider. So really, cases like this aren't that unusual.

22. "How long do you think it will take before there is a movie on same subject?"
2 minutes. Hollywood can rejoice in that this situation, for once, isn't a remake of something done 40 years ago.

Whether or not people will care is another matter, but I'll bet 20 Quatloos that Sci-Fi will be the network showing it, what with their craze into finding material for "reality shows on a sci-fi themed channel".

So the most womanly thing possible is to get knocked up huh? Infertile and childfree women are not as womanly as Termite Queen Duggar?

:grr:

UnFUCKINGbelievable. A story about a person who has chosen to defy the convention of his gender, and they throw a bullshit line like that in there. ABC can blow it out their ass.
