1. oops - meant to include part of the text
<snip>
To our neighbors, my wife, Nancy, and I don’t appear in the least unusual. To those in the quiet Oregon community where we live, we are viewed just as we are -- a happy couple deeply in love. Our desire to work hard, buy our first home, and start a family was nothing out of the ordinary. That is, until we decided that I would carry our child.

3. very admirable people can live and be who they are
only thing that raised a flag was the hormone therapy; I'm assuming and hoping they thoroughly checked out all the medical issues when they decided the get pregnant.

6. I agree.
My son is MtF and I would be extremely concerned were he to make a decision like that - from the health stand-point for both him and a fetus.

I don't think he will; that's really not where his head is at in this process!

11. A MtF transgender wouldn't be able to get pregnant.
At least until they perfect that uterine transplant process.........

16. aha
I was wondering if you called your son 'he' in spite of his/her MtF, but cool you actually do call him by his FtM gender choice. More parents in the world should be as supportive as you.

32. Actually, that's part of why I did the CRS thing.
He has "moved on" from using the FtM or even simply transgendered label and sees himself simply as a male. I'm always running about 10 steps behind him in this process - trying to catch up to where he's at in the process!

As for support; this is my child - I don't care about the package, the person inside is the same human I carried, gave birth to, and raised. This was important to him and he is happy. I know a few of his friends who are also changing gender do not have much support from their families, but most of them do. It took a little while to get my head around it and there is an element of sadness that I doubt will ever really ease for me - this is my only child, so in a way I've lost my daughter and gained a grown son. That's cool - but it's hard for me to look at pictures of this child growing up, because I don't have that daughter any more and I don't have any pictures of my son as a child.

And I say that, despite what I said first - that I don't care about the package. It's very hard to explain - I'm not doing a good job.

eh! Suffice to say, I've got a pretty cool kid and I'm a lucky mom!

10. He does not have a scrotum
Many FTMs chose not to have reconstructive "bottom surgery." The expense, lack of functionality and difficulty in creating male genitals that are realistic in appearance are common reasons.

More, he has made the decision to keep his reproductive organs intact. I don't think that is a very common choice; the FTMs that I know have opted for a hysterectomy in order to permanently end menses.

He and his wife are in for a difficult social challenge. My best wishes to them both and their child.

18. Are you aware of any science behind that?
a baby would have to 'battle' male hormones it's mother was taking?

Are you speculating, or have you read anything to this effect? I admittedly don't know much about it.

19. all embryos start out female until the "hormone cascade" at about 6 wks (I think)
That's when the xx or xy chromosome asserts itself and changes the genitalia from female to male..

I just wonder what the overload of male hormones taken (to produce a beard and suppress menstruation, would have on a developing fetus..

I guess they will know soon :scared:

but maybe not until the child reaches puberty

31. hmm...makes me think the fundies need to be changin' that Creationism story
about GOD creatin' Adam in HIS own image. Clearly, God intended the image to be that of a female. Since the fundies believe that life begins at conception, isn't it time they admit that God created all Americans female. . .or perhaps in HER image?

34. The general rule during pregnancy
is to avoid taking anything during pregnancy that hasn't been tested and determined safe. Since very few things have (relative to what is out there), the usual advice from docs is to assume it is unsafe.

From prior conversations with FTM friends, the external "male" signals (beard, timbre of voice, for example) don't disappear quickly - or perhaps at all - even when hormones are stopped. with this knowledge, I certainly can't tell from the picture whether he is currently on hormones or not - and I assume whatever choice he has made was done on the advice of his doctors (both OB and any associated with the FTM transition).
