And until it gets unbearable, people in the US will not have the incentive to really conserve.

Keeping the price low does not solve the problem.

And I take advantage of it when I can.

But there are also 60 million registered motor vehicles in this country which is the size of California. One motor vehicle for every two people. And for what it's worth, I know of a couple of women who live near train stations and have jobs near other train stations on the same line, but they still prefer to fight traffic and drive to work :wtf:

35. Prices in Japan have gone up from about 110/liter in 2001 to 146/liter now.
Transit is widely available, most cars are more fuel-efficient there and trips are shorter than in the US.

The increase in price is much less over the last 5-6 years than it has been in the US.

IE - gouging is the norm now in the US - prices have always been higher in Japan & Europe due to higher taxes at the pump.

The massive price increases in the US have been PURE PROFIT.

Check the financial reports from ExxonMobil, Shell, etc.

36. Transit is widely available in much of Japan,
but not so much where I am, unfortunately. There is a lot of reliance on automobiles here, and while they may be more fuel efficient overall, I am surprised that there are quite a few gas guzzlers as well. Also, even the fuel efficient cars are less efficient than they could be, given all the uncoordinated stoplights and overall traffic gridlock around here.

what a car you have there. I'm a recovering highly modified VW beetle addict myself and so I can relate to your angst with parting with your Spyder. Put it out back on blocks if you can, you'll be real proud of yourself later, I'm a thinkin'. I know I wished I would have done that very thing but no I had to, give it away, trade in for 500 bucks, to the dealer when I purchased a new '78 VW sirocco.

Add: price of regular unleaded was 3.17 a couple days ago here in north east OK

52. I love the car, but putting it on blocks isn't an option in my condo complex.
I'm wasting money just keeping it licensed and insured, I only drove it about 200 miles last year. The engine purrs, but it only gets about 18mpg. Pretty good for a 30 year old car, but not good at all when gas is $3.50. When I bought my first Fiat gas was about 89 cents.

I plan to use the sale money to buy a small scooter for town. Maybe I can substitute some of the top down fun on a good scooter.. Regardless I have lots of research to do.

when you add your family health insurance to your cost of fuel and energy increases its a wonder the country hasn't gone belly up.
No working families payroll has kept up with these price increases. No country can sustain

There might be things which cause me to feel I am being raped, but the price of gas is not one of them. The fact of the matter is that even with the little money I make and the little I have I am better off than billions of other people on this planet and probably better off than most of the people that have lived throughout history.

30. My 13 year old car gets 42 mpg - I chuckle at idiots spending $80 to fill up their SUVs
Eventually the bubble in oil will play out and prices will drop (until the inevitable supply shortages become chronic).

I'm more concerned with the price of food. I drive as little as possible and have an econobox and always have.

A behemoth SUV was a bad idea in 2000, it's a worse idea now.

If I was loaded, I'd drive a hybrid.

I don't know what to say about this - did people expect that gas prices would be $1.50 forever?

also, do people realize that if EVERYONE switched to a 35mpg car over the next couple of years, the drop in demand would drop prices a lot, IMO.

37. Any short-term drops in oil will be gobbled up by Chinese and Indian drivers
"also, do people realize that if EVERYONE switched to a 35mpg car over the next couple of years, the drop in demand would drop prices a lot, IMO."

That would only work if there is no increase in the number of drivers worldwide, especially in rapidly developing areas like Asia. Unfortunately, they are buying cars by the millions, even with the price of oil what it is. And Tata Motors in India just released a car that sells for less than $2000, making it affordable to tens of millions more people.

Even if they buy 50-mpg cars, that's still more oil used than the bikes and public transport they used before.

There will be no bursting of this oil bubble, unless you consider a 2nd Great Depression an acceptable form of bursting.

38. I disagree in the short term.
Most of what we're seeing is speculation because of a weak dollar and a dearth of profitable investment vehicles is driving people to speculate on commodities like oil.

Supply is adequate over the next few years, and if prices continue this way there could even be a glut, which is why OPEC declined to increase their production output at their last meeting.

You're talking long-term demographic changes, and commodities speculators and oil futures simply do not work in time frames that long.

48. Jevons Paradox
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jevons_paradox

In economics, the Jevons Paradox is an observation made by William Stanley Jevons, that as technological improvements increase the efficiency with which a resource is used, total consumption of that resource may increase, rather than decrease. It is historically called the Jevons Paradox as it ran counter to Jevons's intuition. However, the situation is well understood in modern economics. In addition to reducing the amount needed for a given output, improved efficiency lowers the cost of using a resource – which increases demand. Overall resource use increases or decreases depending on which effect predominates.

In his 1865 book The Coal Question, Jevons observed that England's consumption of coal soared after James Watt introduced his coal-fired steam engine, which greatly improved the efficiency of Thomas Newcomen's earlier design. Watt's innovations made coal a more cost effective power source, leading to the increased use of the steam engine in a wide range of industries. This in turn increased total coal consumption, even as the amount of coal required for any particular application fell.

60. I was the same way. . .
My ten-year-old econobox gets 38 mpg, and only has a ten gallon tank. Yes, it hurts when I fill it up, but I've long ago started cutting back driving - very rare for me to take a pleasure trip. Even though my car has well over 100,000 miles, I intend to keep it well past 200,000 if possible. I haven't had a car payment in fifteen years and don't want one.

If I want to go to the big city (like Chicago) I take the train and SAVE money on parking AND gas. Places that I have to drive (like St. Louis) are now just annual trips (even though it is only two hours drive away.) I do most shopping online, rarely visit a shopping mall, and took the train to a recent conference in Pittsburgh - and walked around downtown to every destination.

I have never understood why people with small families bought those gas guzzling SUVs...I started driving during the shortages in the 1970's and knew then I'd always buy an econobox.

65. In Pasadena, CA
between $3.49 - $3.59 a gallon. Combine trips, I force myself to grocery shop after work, no matter how tired I am, invite friends for a potluck instead of dining out, carpool, check tires!
