Do aerial and satellite views of this address, making sure you go in close enough to see but far enough to see the general neighborhood. The 1 house isn't special, but the area is, google is pre, mapquest post Katrina:

5000 N Tonti St
New Orleans, LA 70117-3432, US

Next, off to Biloxi. My heart is heavy. If we had the money and the Ntl Guard/military that are tied up in Iraq for use here...

2. what am I supposed to be looking at?
looks like a roof. A bit bigger than the surrounding houses, but I don't see what's special about it.

3. check out the same general address on BOTH maps
Edited on Tue Feb-27-07 02:31 AM by uppityperson
not so close to look at just the roof, but the neighborhoods. Look at mapquest map, compare to googlemap. 1 is pre 8/29/05, other is post 4/06.

That 1 house isn't particularly special, just the area. I finally found aerial photos of the area before Katrina, compare to after, how it is now.

5. It is telling to see how it was before.

Just an ordinary neighborhood with houses, trees, streets, people, kids. I've been hopping around comparing the 2 maps. MS coast is wild too. Sure wish I'd gotten down to see it before.

Some places on both maps are only post. Some have pre too.

7. oh man... too much work...
am I supposed to enter the address? I went to the links and one was in the middle of Oklahoma, no house, just a couple roads, the other had nothing.

Isn't it possible to post the links that go to that address? Or post pics of the maps? I think you'll get a better response.

Sorry, don't mean to be so negative...

9. Try this one for mapquest. For google, enter below in search bar
mapquest, then click on "aerial image" at top right of map.
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&searchtab=home&formtype=address&popflag=0&latitude=&longitude=&name=&phone=&level=&cat=&address=5000+N+Tonti+St&city=New+Orleans&state=la&zipcode=

http://maps.google.com/
enter this in "search maps" bar and hit enter. Make sure you get satellite or combo view after it loads so you can see the actual houses.
"5000 N Tonti St, New Orleans, LA"

You may have to click in closer, not so far as to see just 1 house as the house doesn't matter, the neighborhood does. Sorry I can't get the exact closeness in the link but it won't do it. I'll try to get images later once I figure out how.

10. Here are the 2 pictures, not in quite far enough but you might get the idea
If you go to the maps themselves and click in closer, you can see better. This is the lower 9th Ward, levee that the barge came through is at the left. The direct blast zone is below this by a couple blocks. Brick houses don't float like wood ones do. Blue roofs are FEMA roofs, blue tarps.

Googlemaps, pre Katrina

Mapquest, post Katrina

11. Our troops are STILL in the wrong GULF!
this pisses me off! We (this administration) have let an entire city DIE! Perhaps their idea of letting it go back to "seed" so the Oil industry can come in and "reclaim" the land for their use is their plan? I mean, Could that be their plan? Let the oil companies get the land for a song and then build refineries there?

I think mostly 1 was pre, other post, but somewhere (thinking Gulfport area?) both were post.
