Senator Enters GOP Race For Doolittle's Seat
AUBURN (AP) ― A staunchly conservative state senator from Southern California jumped into a Northern California congressional race Tuesday, saying he wanted to help return the Republican Party to the smaller-government themes sounded by Ronald Reagan.
"Like all of you, I watched as Ronald Reagan breathed new life and new energy into that vision," Sen. Tom McClintock said as he announced that he would seek the GOP nomination for the seat now held by Rep. John Doolittle, R-Rocklin.
"It is true that a Republican Congress and a Republican president squandered Ronald Reagan's legacy. They abandoned our principles as Republicans. This campaign is all about taking those principles back."
Doolittle is under investigation in a congressional lobbying scandal and announced in January that he would not run for a 10th term in the House of Representatives.
McClintock's entry into the race for the 4th Congressional District seat prompted another Republican, former state senator Rico Oller of San Andreas, to drop out. Oller said he didn't want to risk splitting the conservative vote and handing the GOP nomination to a third candidate, former Rep. Doug Ose.
