Edited on Sat Mar-01-08 08:36 PM by Godhumor
Excusing working for political campaigns and special interest groups, of course.

I know stats show that, on average, college professors tend to lean liberal, but what about other professions? Are there any that really stand out as being a "liberal" or a "conservative asshat" bastion?

5. A lot of scientists are liberals
As a long time biologist, I have run into SOME conservatives, but its roughly about a 2:1 ratio of liberal to conservative.
And even the conservatives aren't THAT conservative. I think its hard to be a scientist if you aren't open minded....:)

25. Well, plus, it's hard to be a scientist when you don't believe in science
I think that probably deters a bunch of loony conservatives from entering the field. Thankfully.

35. That's called Alchemy
Conservatives tried for centuries to turn lead into gold and spin straw into gold as well.

Having failed that, they've moved onto turning human misery into gold.

36. Old school I taught at hada biology teacher that didn't "believe" in evolution
It was really interesting comparing what kids in her class learned versus what kids in the other teacher's class learned.

Thankfully, she was not allowed to teach the elective on evolutionary biology though she had requested to do so. It's probably better for her that she did not get it, as I imagine within a week or so she would have said some things to remove her from the class setting.

13. Robert Duvall
is to the right of Atilla the Hun and a very good character actor.

I sure don't hire him for his politics but I enjoy watching him work as a story teller.

17. It was a job
From what I've seen, he's a gunny, a hard ass law and order type, and close to a libertarian economically.

Don't forget, he also got converted in "Tender Mercies."

Like I said, I would never hire him for his politics. He is a master story teller, though, and one of the best character actors out there.

But it seems to be some sort of dig at Clinton, although it took him 13 years to write it and I think it was filmed before Clinton was even president.

but, yeah, he's conservative, and I don't think he intended the movie to make fun of fundies but to show a certain humanity in them.

20. Actually the reason I brought this topic up
After 6 years in teaching I am currently earning an MBA in finance, and I have been happily surprised by the number of rather liberal businesss-leaning people in my class. By the same token, when I taught I worked with a lot of right-wingers. Both concepts kind of threw off the idea of politics and jobs correlating.

Was curious as to others' impressions.

10. Liberals....
in our age come in all the professions, especially in the 21st century, there are now high tech liberals, such as Al Gore who invented the internet. Then, there are Republican hackers (like Gates) -- whom steal the work of the liberals -- and sell it in a fixed market that is not fair and certainly not a free market.

23. I think it has a lot to do with the oil business.
John Gunther's book "Inside U.S.A.", written shortly after World War II, said that Tulsa and Houston were the two most backwards and conservative towns he had been in, in the U.S., due to the overwhelming influence of the oil business.

He also said then that although Houston had a fine university, Rice University, it did not have a single good restaurant.

24. There is a good mix among engineers.
I know some engineers who are atheists, some who are democrats, some who are hard-core republicans, and even one super religious one who believes the earth is 6000 years old (and he makes the rest of us unite in WTF?).

22. speaking of artistic and creative types,
I have yet to meet a performing or visual artist or musician who is a conservative.

I'm talking visual artists, film makers, sculptors, jewelry makers, film directors, playwrights, actors and actresses, musicians in popular bands, recording engineers and audio and video editors, classical orchestras, opera singers, professional symphony musicians, magazine writers and editors, writers of any kind, webpage makers. Have not met a SINGLE conservative in any of these fields.

Conservatives just don't seem to have any creative thoughts.

Maybe with an exception for Catholic School teachers.

Lawyers are mostly liberals. To be a lawyer you have to be able to tolerate opposition. Few wingnuts can do that.
