Suppose W ends with a bang rather than whimper: invades and absorbs Canada...
Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 12:10 PM by Boojatta
Would almost all peace groups around the world say that there should be no military response, just as many peace groups opposed a military response to the absorption of Kuwait by Iraq?

Would any major peace groups in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, or Japan say that suicide bombing attacks against civilian targets in the US would be an acceptable response on the grounds that the distinction between war and terrorism is legalistic quibbling and that there can be no peace without justice and no peace until military occupations end?

14. A Canadian Woman by the name of Laura Secord overheard two
American officers talking about a battle to come and took her cow (to help disguise her motives) across the fields to the British officer and told them of the plans. British ended up winning that one. It was a very Canadian war. And we won.

2. As someone who lives in a border state, I would prefer it be the other way around....
..... At least take Michigan. There'd be no weird border issues, Canada would gain control of most of the Great Lakes and the cultures are similar: Half the change in the average Michiganian's pocket is Canadian anyway, and we've even got a bit of the accent, eh?

I'm with you. I'm on the other side of the Great Lakes, and I
wouldn't mind if New York became the next Canadian province.

I live 25 miles from the Canadian border, and we go across once a week to use their local aqua center, the closest public pool to where we live in north central Washington.
Maybe they'd take our whole area as a kinda "hardship case" that the US isn't taking care of properly?
The border guards on both sides say traffic hasn't slowed down even since everyone now has to have a US or Canadian passport to get into the US.
I wish I could enroll in their medical system.
On edit, we watch CBC TV regularly, and one Canadian comic quipped that if the US invaded Canada everyone would just go to their backwoods cabins and the invaders'd find nobody left to run the country. :hi:

I thought that a passport was only required if traveling by air or sea? Did ground crossings change?

10. Yes, as of Jan 31st.
It isn't written in stone yet but they DO require all vehicle passengers to have a passport on the northern border, I think they're still actually letting people back in with driver's licenses in fact for a couple months or so with a stern warning, but since we bought our passports last year we're just part of the regular traffic now.

17. Yes, so one might anticipate that he would first annex nearby
territory to increase America's defensive posture provided that the annexation doesn't itself provoke a reaction that weakens US defense. For example, if W were in control of 1933-era Germany rather than 2008-era America, then isn't it possible that he would try to annex, occupy, or invade a neighboring country such as Austria, Czechoslovakia, or Poland?

...If he decides to go out with a bang, he'll either attack Iran, or invade Cuba.

16. Alaska is cut off from America. The decider could be a uniter.
Edited on Thu Feb-28-08 04:49 PM by Boojatta
Just as Reagan allegedly tore down the Berlin wall, W can tear down walls between the northern states and Alaska.

Only a few tens of millions of people who call themselves "Canadians" stand in the way. The Canadian federal government might arrange a secret deal for W to blow up some parts of Quebec that have heavy separatist sentiment. Then Canada as a whole could surrender and apologize for calling America a "Shatner-stealing Mexico-toucher."

18. So, historians think we fought hard against the Nazis?
That would be nothing if Bush invaded Canada.

Hell, I'd be organizing my own militia IN HOURS if Bush ever made such a foolhardy decision.

We've defended ourselves against Americans before.

We'll do it again.

And when we're finished, we'll teach Iraqis our secrets.

Which Iraqis? There are some divisions of loyalty in Iraq along sectarian religious lines, along ethnic lines, based on past associations (Baath?), etc. No?

23. Isn't there a law of unintended consequences?
When Russian Czars annexed territory, they probably didn't foresee that descendants of Jews who had been living in that territory would be living in places like Moscow.

22. The George Bush legacy isn't ending when his term is over,
The dictatorial government structure is still in place, so the government he will leave behind is his own. So he doesn't have to do any big military manuever. You are not free and we are still an agressive force in the world.
