Why use *, or **, or ***, or ****, instead of the name?
I understand using a "funny name" or "initials" when referring to someone,

for example: GWB, DC, KO, HRC, BO, Billary, McCane, etc.

I don´t understand using "****" instead of a name.

Did I miss a thread about Homeland Security checking e-mails for ****´s name?

What makes someone so special that they get 4 stars instead of a name?

:-)

3. Bush** and Cheney** each get two asterisks from me...
...because they're going down in the record books as having stolen two elections.

NGU.

22. I use two as well.
I never thought of using that for Cheney although it is probably because I get a really sick feeling even typing his name. Bush** just makes me angry.

Not elected once, not elected twice. It sucked a lot to go from one * to two.

4. I believe it comes from Doonesbury
The comic strip? Bush is never drawn, he's just an asterisk with a cowboy hat (or gladiator helemt as appropriate). It denotes a complete lack of substance.

23. It's not just Bush, a lot of major political figures get icons in Doonesbury.
Trudeau traditionally avoids trying to draw faces of political figures, instead showing them off-panel or providing "icons." The astrisk is Bush's, along with either a cowboy had or a Roman helmet. Gingrich was a bomb with a lit fuse, Ahhnold is a giant hand, etcetera.

8. Because the people who use them are too polite to
use Asshole. Personally, I'd prefer to call him what he is, Stupid.

He's spent 7 years in a job, fucked up everything he's touched, and remains blissfully unaware of the havoc and that is the definition of STUPID.

I just hope this country survives him and that we manage to keep his party away from hurtful things for the decades it will take to repair the damage.

10. I remember on DU it came in to use just after the SCOTUS
decision in 2000 that gave him the presidency. Like back when Maris broke Babe Ruth's record but did it in more games so he got an * besides the record.

It meant Bush didn't win the Presidency legitimately. He was selected not elected.

17. "There will always be an asterisk beside his name in the record books ..."
... because he STOLE the elections. Trudeau was the first to use * as a symbol for Bush. After he stole the 2004 election, he deserved a second *. I always write Bu**sh** in honor of a certain very well-done bumper sticker.

26. Supreme Court Justice Breyer (I believe)said in his written rebuttal to
the decision of Bush* vs Gore that the decision was so flawed that Bush* would always have his name followed by an asterisk and ever since that time I have done that very thing when I write his name as a constant reminder that he is in office illegitimately.

I knew that it came from Doonesbury, but this is why Trudeau draws Bush as an asterisk with a battered Roman helmet.

31. Because the so-called humans behind those asterisks deserve
not even enough respect to either verbalize or to type their actual names. I use an asterisk at times when I imagine those animals going to prison and being reduced to a footnote in history. The problem with that sentiment is that the damage they've done can NEVER be forgotten.

40. No! No! No!
The asterix refers to the fact that GWB wasn't ELECTED to the presidency - he was foisted upon us by the Supreme Court. Like an athlete having an asterix in the record books. It should be a constant reminder thru history that he was NOT the people's choice and was never the truly elected leader of our country.
