Soviet America...

No doubt you have all seen the broadcast on 60 Minutes about the Don Siegelman case. It was excellent and out of the three major bombshells, two were delivered tonight. Here is what I have learned today to add to this drama and it demands that you take actions:

1. 60 Minutes is interested in doing additional add-on installments of this story. I have it on good authority that the show's reporters and producers have much more to tell about the duo of Bill and Leura Canary as well as more about the corrupt judge, Mark Fuller, on the case. The network has agreed to run one, maybe two more installments if there is interest shown by the public. You have to let them know you want more on Fuller, the Canary couple, and the trial itself. You can contact CBS here:

2. I am hearing very disturbing reports that I have not yet confirmed - but need your help to confirm - that parts of northern Alabama went to black screen during the Siegelman broadcast. Anyone in the northern districts of Alabama who had this happen, please let either me or Scott Horton know.

3. If you have seen the broadcast, then you now know that the key witness against Don Siegelman lied and that the prosecution was aware of it. There is more to the Nick Bailey story too. I have known for some time - but have not fully confirmed for an article - that Nick Bailey's brother was threatened with jail time by the US attorney's office (because he is allegedly as corrupt as Nick) if Nick did not testify against Siegelman. Based on the Bailey issue alone, Don Siegelman's conviction must be overturned. Moreover, US Attorney Leura Canary must be fired immediately and fully investigated. To accomplish this, you must demand that Congress respond to what is looking more and more like Soviet justice.

Contact your Congressperson here.

And finally, happy birthday Governor Siegelman.

4. Done! K&R! Thanks for the info!
Here's my email to 60 Minutes:

Dear 60 Minutes:

After your excellent report tonight on the unjust prosecution of Alabama’s Gov. Don Siegelman, the story cries out for more vigilance, more investigation and more information brought to the attention of the American people. I am especially interested in this godawful business of the use of the U.S. Attorney’s office for political prosecutions—the involvement of US Attorney Leura Canary and the use of pressured, threatened witnesses. We haven’t seen anything this bad in our nation’s history—with the White House actually organizing the naked misuse of our justice system for political gain. We have seen particular injustices, certainly, and sometimes misuse of power for unjust purposes. But this pattern of deliberate, White House-run politicalization of the Justice Department, wrongful political appointments to the position of U.S. Attorney, and unjust, political prosecutions of Democrats, beats all. The Nixon White House comes to mind. But even that pales by comparison to this all-out assault on the very idea of even-handed justice. It is appalling. It is profoundly un-american, and reminiscent of “banana republic” governments, if not worse: Stalinist government.

The U.S. press corps has a long way to go to regain the trust of the American people, after you have permitted the Bush regime to get away with a list of ‘high crimes and misdemeanors” so long it could circle the planet—including unjust war and the slaughter of 1.2 innocent Iraqis to get their oil, torturing prisoners, detention with trial, the shredding of the Constitution, the Geneva Conventions, the Uniform Code of Military Justice and numerous laws and treaties, the unaccountable military spending and looting, massive domestic spying, election theft, and on and on and on. CBS has been a bit more vigilant than most others, but that isn’t saying much, frankly, and your treatment of the Bush Texas National Guard story, and of Dan Rather, speaks of cowardice and private greed—and of untoward influence of your executives on news policy. You used to be the “rock” of American broadcast journalism. I remember. I go way back. I hope you aspire to be that again, because we need you. The American people desperately need you to do your jobs as journalists. The Siegelman case is emblematic of the perils to our democracy that we must grapple with. Please fully expose it, and help us restore objective, disinterested justice. It is as badly needed as objective, disinterested reporting.

Thank you for your attention!

Don Siegelman spending his birthday in jail? Wow kinda sad. Certainly that's not justice when Karl Rove is sitting on his fat ass free somewhere in Texas.:grr:
