'It Can't Happen Here' - Sinclair Lewis (1935)...
with the current state of affairs being what it is, I might suggest some research for all of us @ DU concerning the state the USA was in 70 years ago. Read Studs Turkels "Working"...see how close the country was to 'chucking it all'...and not for any one set of ideals. We are a country constantly at battle with itself. There is good and bad, but that is not the nature of the battle. The battle is between the haves and the have-nots, and each group's attempts to control the power that our Democracy grants the People through the Constitution.

Bush & Co. aren't the worst, necessarily...they are just more of the same. Their counterparts in the 19teens through 1920's about totally destroyed the fabric of our society. Nixon was a piker...just a plain power-hungry politician who could not get out of his own way. These guys want to run everything, take all the money, generate an even larger population of Americans who feel powerless and voiceless. The lack of a voice in our Democratic process is the most effective weapon to 'keep the People in their place."

It is not very often that America finds itself in the condition we are in now: Constitution under assault, some obvious, some silent; rights being ignored, liberties disappearing in mere moments of executive and/or legislative action; an economy so bankrupt that individuals have 'too much to worry about' (by design) to be able to pay attention to what havoc the multi-nationalist corporations are wreaking; the richest nation on Earth with dismal health care; jobs disappearing by the 10's of thousands, while the big companies talk about 'job creation'; a war-for-profit that is draining every last drop of treasure, financially and humanly, that our country can offer; and, not the end by any means, but the worst of all:

AMERICAN WHO HAVE LOST HOPE. We have come so far, we don't even know what we have lost. This might not be 'The Great Depression', not yet anyway, but our country is headed for more of the debilitating moral and morale effects of a People who can't see a way out of all this.

I don't know if it is actually Barack Obama that can help lead us. I am not saying it can't be Hillary Clinton.

I am saying it won't just be either one of them.

It is you and me. At some point, we have to come together. It does not matter if that is before November even. More people than ever are tired of the state of the USA. A lot of them think in polar-opposite views than many of us. But, even those people know something must be done. It is up to us to return the powers, inherent in our Rights, to the People. Enough is enough. Involve yourselves locally. Make yourselves heard.

"We, the People..." still means something. Those are not cheap words, they have been paid for with the greatest sacrifices millions of people could ever make. We can not give those words up so easily. Without a fight.

Because...WE ARE THE PEOPLE.
