My theory on the McCain 'scandal.' Timing is everything.
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 10:27 PM by americanstranger
Okay, let's look at the timing of this thing....

The NYT has been sitting on this months, and it just happens to come out when McCain's got the nomination all but locked up - but also some distance from the general election in November.

If I were the suspicious sort, I'd wonder if the McCain camp gave up 'fighting to keep this story from coming out' at the most opportune time possible.

Think about it. McCain's close to clinching the nomination at this point. As the DC punditry opine that the story will only last a couple of days, all McCain needs to do is continue to deny, deny, deny until the story dies down.

And presto! He's innoculated! If the story re-surfaces between now and election day, Team McCain can dismiss it as 'old news.'

It's positively Rovian if you think about it. Quite reminiscent of the way the Bush campaign handled a number of potentially damaging stories.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that the McCain campaign engineered the release of this story.

And that is my theory, which is mine, and which belongs to me...

1. What was the bit about The New Republic
was going to break the story if the NYT hadn't ?

I just caught a glimpse on a closed captioned tv in a noisy restaurant

7. Yeah it was on MSNBC during Dan Abrahms show
the closed captioning was going by fast but I believe that's what it said.
Was anyone else watching?

If it smells like Rove, walks like Rove it must be Rove.

5. Definitely Agree
And I'll let people know that you came up with the theory :P

Of course, the Republicans couldn't let Bill Clinton go. Can we get a special prosecutor involved in this? I'd like to impeach McCain before he even has the chance to be Prez...

9. 41's endorsement put the icing on the cake IMHO.

The NYT was probably waiting until McCain collected a few major endorsements before they went public.

10. i'd be inclined to believe it is other republicans who engineered this
plenty of 'em really don't like him. AND it has the added bonus of opening the door to doing the same to obama and hillary
