Bill slated to file through a House sub-committee on Tuesday; TEP's Advancing Equality Day on the Hill scheduled for same day

Tennessee children will be shielded from the word "homosexuality" if one lawmaker has his way. It's another contentious debate that could find its way to the State House this week.

"We're not going to teach about topics that I think should be taught at home in the first place. We're not going to teach about homosexuality, the homosexual lifestyle, the lesbian lifestyle, the transgendered lifestyle. We're going to leave that up to families to decide when it's age appropriate, when it isn't appropriate, and what they want to tell their children," said State Rep. Stacey Campfield, (R) Knoxville.

House Bill 29-97 is slated to file through a House sub-committee Tuesday about the time an army of opponents plan to appeal to lawmakers for equal rights. The Tennessee Equality Project said Campfield's proposal to teach exclusively hetero-sexuality is an embarrassment and an attack on the spirit of education.

Chris Sanders, TN Equality Project: "Teachers don't have to advocate one side or the other. But they do have to give opportunity for students to explore those issues and debate those issues -- particularly in 7th and 8th grade when they're learning to think critically," said Chris Sanders with the Tennessee Equality Project.

It is a divisive issue. But some teachers, who stick to science, teaching physiology over feelings, are square in the middle. Parent of three and former teacher, Lisa Howard said taking the word from textbooks doesn't make homosexuality go away.

F'ing idiots. I don't care if you like Obama or Hillary, both would be a helluva lot better than ANY R that would get in.

4. Those who are different MUST BE MARGINALIZED,
ridiculed, despised, marched off to the ovens and gas chambers!
I think there are way too many people who believe this way.
LET PEOPLE BE!!!

17. The point is that the GOP traditionally has to have some group to marginalize
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 03:42 PM by Gman
That has always been wild card in an election. In addition to gays, the dreaded brown invader from the south, the illegal Mexican and Central American alien, is this year's newest group to attack. And of course, the GOP makes vague at best distinctions between Mexican/Central America-Americans and Mexican nationals and other Pan Americans here illegally.

6. We have got to support these brave initiatives!
Otherwise how are we going to win the battle against these darn dictionary words?

Hey, I like that. The RNC is welcome to license the following slogan from me (for top dollar, of course): "The Republican Party - Taking Down The Dictionary One Word At A Time."

Next week's word: abortion.

8. I'm obviously a product of a Canadian education.
I don't 'get' any of this shit.

Why shouldn't you talk about homosexuality and lesbians in the classroom? It's not like these kids aren't going to ever come in contact with same-sex couples, and maybe acceptance would erase the "problem." Why, in the name of everything logical, do these folks think that they can erase GLBT leanings with laws? Why would they want to? If a same sex couple isn't having sex on your living room carpet, what difference does it make to you? Are we to forbid all personal contact whatever now?

9. The lawmaker probably thinks you can "get the gay" through casual contact.
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 03:08 PM by missb
Homophobia doesn't even begin to describe the issues this particular lawmaker has.

13. More topics
that should be taught at home:

1. Intelligent design/creationism
2. Basic respect for fellow human beings
3. Listening to others
4. The concept that the child is not the center of the universe
5. How to follow rules
6. Consequences if the child does not follow the rules

So while the good lawmakers of Tennessee are removing the topic of homosexuality, could they also include topic #1 on the list of things that should be taught only at home? And maybe another bill encouraging that parents take a stab at #2 through #6 so teachers don't have to take time to teach the kids those basic principles. Then they could, I don't know, devote their time to teaching the cirriculum?

14. There are plenty of Democrats who believe and would legislate the exact same thing
Being Republican is no proof of idiocy and bigotry. Being Democrat is not proof against being an idiot and a bigot. Should one vote for a Democrat with proven homophobia only because a Republican might be worse?

15. I learned about homosexuality from my friends.
I remember talking about it in 5th grade with my friends. What was gay, what was lesbian. We figured it out ourselves. Our parents had no idea.
