Survivalist Forum or Discussion Group?
Edited on Thu Feb-14-08 11:23 PM by Mike03
Is there any desire for a survivalist forum? It could be a forum where we could contemplate strategies for storing foods/supplies, depriving ourselves of extragenzezes and being healthy, strong and able to store up, and protect ourselves, for any hazard or catastrophe that might happen.

I admit that I am NOT informed on these matters; but I do want to learn.

4. There's a great group of people at...
This Yahoo forum: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/RunningOnEmpty2/

with loads of good information on staying alive and healthy in bad times. It doesn't have the crazy "survivalist" loonies that such groups so often attract. These are solid, sensible folks.

The orientation is "Peak Oil" related, but economic and other systemic meltdown scenarios are considered as well.

6. Sharon Astyk at Causabon's book
is starting a series on food storage in March

http://casaubonsbook.blogspot.com/

she's way more progressive than most of the survivalist kind of sites I have visited. She focuses on sustainable living rather than survival.

15. Thank you for that link.
I just spent way too much time reading it, but thank you. I'm very interested in the sustainable living movement. The survivalist sites kind of freak me out, with their emphasis on weapons and stockpiling. I'm more interested in learning to become less dependent on corporate America while also preparing myself (within reason) for whatever lies ahead in these "interesting times."

9. Protecting themselves from us I presume...
As in people in renter's hell, who, when the system collapses, will be roaming the streets after they miss a payment, with no place to store supplies. We'll be s.o.l.

I guess there should be an opposite forum for people in that situation.

10. Actually "owning property"....
Is also an illusion. Just wait when the federal government can't provide the services, the property owners are going to bare the costs.

13. I hope they do...
Sort of like england's concept of the people owning the land, I don't think that people should lay claim to more than their share of the Earth, something God/Nature gave us, and which I believe I have rights to (no more than my equal share) as much as donald Trump and his heirs do.

11. I'm going to hike out to a rural area and rent myself and my two boys out.
They come from good solid German stock. We know how to work. :)

I've pretty much boned up on basic gardening, and they say the NW will be getting stronger seasons (a real winter with snow, and hotter summers) very like the climate I grew up in, so that might come in handy for me.

I was a townie surrounded by cornfields, so I totally need a mentor concerning livestock. Chickens I can handle, and I'm sure I could keep anything alive.. but there is so much knowledge I could have gained if I'd bothered to pay attention when I was kid. :(

I can build a house or repair most anything in it that doesn't run on electricity. I'm real handy to have around.

I don't mind sleeping rough, had several friends I hung out with who would camp all summer to save on rent, and I took several week-long winter trips so I figure getting out of the city would be my best plan.

12. Good luck with that...
I don't think it will work, but hey I'm probably wrong. Even in the country, maybe especially, you'll be even more alone to protect yourselves from rouge thieves and murderers. People sleeping in the rough would be especially easy targets. Land owners may get tired of solicitors, have nothing to pay in money or goods, some maybe shooting trespassers on sight.

To be honest, my parents have a home and a lakehouse out in the country. So maybe I'm not that bad off. My point was just that the numbers on the streets compared to land owners would be absolutely overwhelming.

We need to live in harmony no matter what happens. There is no alternative. I don't want to contemplate society falling apart.

and I hunted and camped my whole childhood. We'll do better than most city dwellers.
