Gun-control activist Josh Sugarmann owns - get this - a FEDERAL FIREARMS LICENSE
In Washington, DC, no less. Home of some of the nation's strictest municipal gun laws. Observe:

Why does the executive director of Violence Policy Center own an FFL? Does he plan on renewing it before it expires on March 1? I think we'd all be interested in hearing Sugarmann's side of the story...

8. It's a thought...
I don't begrudge anyone the right to defend themselves with a handgun, if necessary. But to deny any other law-abiding American that same right while reserving it for yourself? Sugarmann has called for banning handguns in the past, and I haven't seen where he changed his mind on this.

10. I agree it appears hypocritical
You know I am not a gun person so I am really not qualified to offer an opinion. But my first thought was that maybe he had somehow been forced to start carrying a handgun. I know it would take a lot for me to do that, and a threat just may be the ticket.

Please note I am not criticizing YOUR right to CCW. Just saying it's not my thing.

I do hope, however, that Sugarmann has not been subjected to threats against his life. Despite my own disagreements with him, I hope he is able to live his life without looking over his shoulder all the time.

15. An FFL isn't for handguns
It lets you buy things like machine guns, grenade launchers, etc. It also lets you (and requires you to) use the national "background check" system whenever you sell a gun.

17. An FFL is for dealing guns, manufacturing, etc.
But for full auto you need a class III FFL.

A Federal Firearms License, or FFL, is a license that enables an individual or a company to engage in a business pertaining to the manufacture of firearms and ammunition or the interstate and intrastate sale of firearms. Holding an FFL to engage in certain such activities has been a legal requirement within the United States of America since the enactment of the Gun Control Act in 1968

19. I was being simplistic
I didn't read the article so I don't know what class of FFL he has. In fairness it's probably not a III; maybe just a curio if he collects. Or he wants to hack NICS. I don't know.

...I really NEED a firearm, whereas you commoners don't!"

Regardless, hell WILL freeze over before they manage to disarm us up here on the rez. We have seen firsthand what that gets you.

$132,894 salary for the executive director of an advocacy organization with net assets of only $98,162?

It's good to be the king... :silly:

12. FFL is not
It is not a license to carry a gun in any way, it is a license to buy and sell firearms and depending on which class you have it is limited and tightly regulated by the ATF... in fact it specifically states that it in no wayt gives anyone th eright to carry a concealed weapon.

16. Not everyone can get an FFL...
I don't know all the particulars, but from what I've heard you have to have a storefront where you sell firearms, or have a mail-order business, or be a gun manufacturer, or fall into one of a few other categories.

Years ago, there were lots of private individuals who got class 2 dealers' licenses and became "kitchen table FFLs" primarily for the purpose of firearm transfers, but the BATFE put a stop to that in the 1990s, ostensibly because there were so many FFLs it was hard to keep track of them all. Now you have to be able to prove that you're selling guns for a living with regular business hours, on top of paying a $200-some annual fee.

Something tells me the VPC doesn't meet all the requirements for a license. Perhaps some phone calls to the local BATFE office would help set them straight.

20. No surprise to me. I posted this just yesterday:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=2840853&mesg_id=2847502

In my lifetime, all the loudest & most radical "gun grabbers"
I've met have been arrogant elitists who possessed firearms.

They liked to imagine themselves "special"...they had guns,
but they wanted laws to prevent everyone else from having any.

ESPECIALLY if the "everyone else" in question was blue collar
or, worse yet, brown skinned.

We have one of their ilk here at DU, y'know.
I'll not name names, but he lives in an "exclusive" suburban enclave called BUCKHEAD,
from which he posts his frothing "ban all private possession of handguns" screeds.

And I'll bet you a nickel he's got a pistol in his nightstand.
Because he's never said a damn thing I haven't heard before,
and he's EXACTLY the type, to a "t".
