To those of us who believe... (or a really condemning Xtian thread)
Edited on Thu Feb-07-08 01:31 PM by Dawggie
I don't understand you, but respect you in the spirit of the fact that I do not know all.

Me? I have decided not to believe. This does not make me immoral or even mean.

I help people when I can, I do no harm to others, but I am damned by so many of you because I don't believe in the things hat you do.

I don't even believe in a "higher power" of any sort.

This kind of leaves me out of most treatment programs for substance abuse, public office and a myriad of other public programs here in America.

We, the atheists, the non-believers, are really a pretty good bunch of people.

Me? I don't like guns and would consider myself a pacifist.

I also love the idea of helping those less fortunate than myself.

Yes, I don't believe in God, but I really support the ideas that "Jesus/Hercules/etc. taught.

There is a lot of good we can all do here no matter what your beliefs are. You just have to decide.

1. Interesting...my higher power...
turned out to be the universe. As a power greater than myself. I don't concern myself with anyone else's choice of belief. If they are anything like me, than they have a hard enough time describing it to themselves. I'm not sure what it is you think I need to decide in order to do good.

2. Your other threads today aren't exactly screaming "I respect you"
Or are your "believing in Santa" jibes your way of showing respect?

Maybe you should start another dozen threads to clarify.

3. Sorry, I have had only one other thread today. And this one did not include the word you mentioned.

4. So, again, are respect and mockery compatible for you?

6. Sorry, you went way over my head that time.
I have no idea what you are referring to or talking about. Could you explain?

8. This is the only time I will repeat myself:
You say you respect people with religious beliefs. In this thread. You then, elsewhere, mock said beliefs as dumb and the same as believing in Santa.

You cannot claim both. Pick one. Respect or disrespect.

9. It was apparently important enough to start a thread about, but not remember doing so.
In any case your claim that you had only one other thread was bullshit. Like pretty much everything that you type.

14. What are you? Backup?
I'm not Jesus, dear. But I do find it amusing when non-Christians tell Christians how to be Christians, then bitch about Christians judging them.

19. Backup?? No.... Comic Relief
Lighten up, Francis! :hi:

I was just pointing out the irony of you chastising someone for being insulting... by hurling an insult at them..

I really don't care what you believe, man.... whatever helps someone get through this mean ol' world and makes it tolerable enough for them to want to live is ok with me....

Hell, I personally believe that we were created by beings from another planet... but that's a long story... if you want to hear it sometime...

Go in peace!

Ghost

22. All I want is consistency
I don't want people starting threads pretending they're tolerant when three posts down they have a thread saying exactly the opposite.

The name's David, btw. Lighten up David? Probably should, yeah, but frankly this is fun.

I just went on what you reminded me of.

But then again, I'm dealing with someone who believes..... Bwahahahaha!

10. Sorry, I think you may have a problem.
This is beyond the silliness intended by the OP.

I would suggest you consider professional help.

Seriously. And I hope nothing but the best for you.

I'm trying to teach you not to be a hypocrite. What diversionary tactic will you try next to take the focus off your nonsense?

Look, believing in non-existential, magic beings has been a hobby of humans since they couldn't figure out fire.

I am sorry you're still there.

17. Oops, there goes your veneer of tolerance...again.
Doesn't it feel better not lying about being respectful and all that? Now you're free to be the hysterical, hand-wringing bigot I knew you were. :)

21. Actually I outed you as a hypocrite
and a bigot. Not as a non-believer. I don't give a shit about that. And as for hell, well you're talking to the wrong fellow about that. I'm a universalist. See you in heaven.

15. We each choose the path we walk in life
and it would be wonderful if everyone would respect the decisions of others in matters of believing or not believing in higher powers. In my lifetime, my beliefs have evolved and changed, and I don't see them ever being set in stone. The inner work we all do to try and understand ourselves and how we fit into life is enough of a task to keep us all busy enough not to worry about the beliefs of others, I think. And, as you said, there is a lot of good everyone can do--if we decide to get along, which can be done through tolerance and respect.

20. Actual respect for fellow humans is too often missing from the Christian worldview.
Sure, they SAY "love thy neighbor" and "do unto others..." but when push comes to shove most would happily begin burning heretics at the stake again.

And I've been a Christian all my life.

25. And that's great. And I support you.
I'll support any religion that purports itself and exemplifies itself by the true message of Jesus.

It is the bastardizations of his messages that really have my panties in a wad.

24. But how can you do anything good if you're not forced to?
Why would you ever do anything that is not self-serving if it weren't for those hellfires of damnation? Only belief in God can make you do good.:sarcasm:

This is why the fear-based existence is so appealing to the fundy. The consideration of right/wrong is "how will I be punished", not "doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do".
