The newly-chartered Van Buren County Young Marines is in the process of accepting applications for enrollment. An informational meeting will be held Wednesday, January 30 at the Lawrence Elementary School cafeteria, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Recruit training will begin Wednesday, February 6 at the same time.

According to Glenn Alters Commanding, the Young Marines promote the mental, moral and physical development of its members, a healthy, drug-free lifestyle, and focuses on character-building and leadership skills.

Any young person between the ages of 8 and 18 years who is in good standing at school is welcome to sign up. After graduating from the 26-hour orientation program, youths will have the opportunity to learn new skills, earn rank, ribbons and awards for activities such as community service, athletics, academic excellence, first aid, CPR and drug resistance education.

2. These folks, obviously, have never been in a marine barracks.

As one who spent 4 years in those barracks, all I can say is....

3. From my understanding, it's kind of like boy scouts and the big brother
program rolled into one. I'm sure they get recruiting pitches, but so does everyone else and this probably looks good on a college application.

6. How does killing people build character?
What's moral about shooting other human beings? What's healthy - physically, mentally or spiritually - about kicking in a family's front door and executing them? Or do those lessons come a little later?
