Breaking on MSNBC: Duck!!
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 04:17 PM by malaise
A US spy satellite could crash somewhere on earth in February. It has no power - they've lost control of it.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry. The irony is too much for me. Now if it lands at a pig farm in Crawford Texas, I will roll on the floor laughing.

24. Wouldn't that depend on the percentage of water in it's last known trajectory?
Of course it's a spy satellite, so they won't tell us.

6. Pretty good
Should be interesting to watch the scientists try to figure out where it will crash. The problem is that it has some seriously toxic stuff aboard.

4. I just saw that article- scary. Hazardous materials, I wonder what kind? Nuclear?
I remember some years back an uproar about Cassini,
a satellite powered by some god awful hazardous
material- people were alarmed that they would send it
out to space for this very reason.
That it might come crashing down.

18. Yes, I wondered the name of the satellite too-
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 04:34 PM by BeHereNow
They probably aren't saying because they
don't want people to look it up and panic
once they learn the details of the hazards.

Note the article said the satellite "may" contain
hazardous materials.

Naturally the MSM is not going to tell
us anything close to the truth.

Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 07:48 PM by utopiansecretagent
Cassini carries 72lbs of the stuff:
http://www.cnn.com/TECH/9710/10/cassini.advancer/

I would imagine other spy satellites may have them as well.

Oh, well, just means now we have even MORE plutonium blowing around in our atmosphere....

A large U.S. spy satellite has lost power and propulsion and could hit the Earth in late February or March, government officials said Saturday.

The satellite, which no longer can be controlled, could contain hazardous materials, and it is unknown where on the planet it might come down, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information is classified as secret.

In light of any of the various possibilities that could be considered "disasters", I'd kinda like to see a preparedness forum here at DU.

Hopefully this is the very satellite that the NSA was planning to allow leased time by various law enforcement agencies and others for DOMESTIC purposes.
