Good news about my mother
Most of you probably read the thread from this morning about my mother's being ejected from Olean General Hospital because of her lack of insurance.

I spent most of the day on the phone to a number of people, including an attorney. The upshot is that the hospital has agreed to stabilize her condition, we've pulled together enough money to cover medication she will need immediately after leaving the hospital, and plans are underway to move her to another hospital, one closer to me, that she would feel more comfortable staying at if the condition worsens.

This has been a hellish six months for both of us medically and financially. I, myself, am staring $250,000.00 in unpaid and unpayable hospital bills in the face, and now we're going to have her expenses to worry about, too, but somehow we will pull through.

I want to thank everyone who responded earlier today. When I posted, I had intended to just blow off some steam. I didn't expect it to suddenly become a DU crusade with phone calls and action. Thank you to everyone who took this upon themselves as a cause, and thank you to everyone who sent positive thoughts and energy our way. It's been a rollercoaster day, but we pulled through.

Thank you all again.

1. Somehow I missed this. I will go
back and find the link. It seems that if none of us dies a natural death the insurance companies will see to our demise. I am sure you have been through hell. I hope things will work out.

2. Good For You Both
I wasn't around so I have no credit to claim, but I still want to say hooray! As one life survivor with family issues to another. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers that angels will continue to meddle on your behalf.

6. Glad to hear that.

At some time speak with an family attorney regarding the bills. You are not responsible for your mother's debts.

8. Not worried about her debts.
Worried about my own. Two emergency hospitalizations during the summer ran up a quarter million in bills.

7. It is shameful that you had to go through this.
There is no need for ANYONE in this Country to be destroyed by our broken healthcare "system".

12. i'm so glad you managed to get this worked out. i found your other
thread a couple hours ago--and this has a much happier turn of events.

i'm just wondering, you're moving her to another hospital? is this hospital she is in kicking her out or are the doctors/hospital saying she no longer needs to be hospitalized at this point?

13. You mean we have to tell the Congresspeople, Senators,
the local newspaper, radio stations, the poor person answering the phones at the hospital, Michael Moore,
the Governor, local consumer agencies, the hotline at the State Medical Board.etc..etc......

NEVER MIND?

15. I would think that after cutting her off completely, especially if she was unstable
That a really good deal could be cut with the hospital concerning those unpaid bills, if only to avoid a lot of publicity and a possible lawsuit.

Have your lawyer call them and "discuss" the matter with them. Not saying that you should sue, but I was under the impression that it was against the law to try to move an unstable patient, and it sounds like they weren't even planning on moving her. I bet her unpaid bills would just go away, as they should after what they tried to do to her. Sounds like attempted murder to me.
