PBC commissioners approve spay/neuter ordinance
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/localnews/content/local_news/epaper/2008/01/15/0115SPAY.html

West Palm Beach — Palm Beach County commissioners gave initial approval this afternoon to a controversial plan that will require all pet owners to spay and neuter their animals unless they pay for a more expensive license tag and sign an affidavit agreeing not to breed their pets.

The rules would also prevent breeders from breeding more than two litters of puppies and kittens a year. Breeders would be required to obtain a breeding permit and would be forced to hand over the names, addresses and phone numbers of the people who buy their pets.

I don't know what to say about this. Why can't they have low cost spay/neuter opportunities?? Instead, they are punishing the people who do take care of their animals. I have 3 dogs and only 2 of them are fixed. It cost us $200 to get Scooter fixed (vet's office) and $65 to get Sable fixed (Humane Society). Thank goodness I left Palm Beach County.

1. Frankly, this should be a NATIONAL LAW
Millions of un-wanted puppies, kittens, cats and dogs - because of irresponsible owners.

These animals destroy the environment/wildlife.

5% of all (1 BILLION) birds in North America are killed by cats EVERY YEAR, many of them feral cats.

3. Excellent. I only hope this movement spreads across the country like wildfire. Even to Arkansas!

4. I am for it, however I agree with the OP about cost

The humane society here(B-ham, WA) gave me a low-income sliding scale deal for my cat Max, so he was only $20 to neuter. His companion Caliban came neutered (plus shots, wormed, the works) thru the humane society for $100. Where I previously lived in IL and CA there was no low-cost neuters and I was paying well over $100 per animal for these services.

Which is more affordable- subsidies to poorer and fixed income people that make neutering affordable, or a continuing glut of pups and kitties being discarded? This hits home, as I fished baby Max (eyes barely open) out of an unattended box next to the local Grocery Outlet.

Vets have thanked me for getting my animals neutered...I always thought it was one of the basic responibilities...
