Sibel Edmonds case: Facts and Thanks.
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 06:36 PM by lukery
Sibel wants to personally thank all of you for all your support.

From Let Sibel Edmonds Speak
The Sibel Edmonds case demonstrates the failure of the corporate media in the US. It is readily apparent that we need to rely on alternative media, the blogs, and foreign media to move this story forward, with solid, fact-based reporting.

In the last 12 months, we have had tremendous support in getting exposure to the story and filling in many of the unknowns. In particular, I'd like to thank Mike Mejia, Brad Friedman, Scott Horton, Mizgin, and leveymg.dailykos.com for their countless contributions. The Daily Kos and Democratic Underground communities have also been terrific with their support. Sibel asked me to pass on her thanks, saying "The support in the last 12 months has been fantastic, and has enabled us to get the story where it is today. Thank you."

The latest article in the {link:www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article3137695.ece | Sunday Times] details how a criminal network has been procuring and proliferating nuclear technology to the highest bidder; nation states as well as non-state terrorist groups. This dangerous network includes people at the highest levels of the US government, and their activities are being actively covered up by the executive, congress, the judiciary and the media.

The Times article generated subsequent press in Israel, Turkey, India, Pakistan and Australia, and in the online media. Justin Raimondo's piece stands out, Joseph Cannon also had a great post. Sibel would like to thank you for pushing the story.

The reason we have had this much success in the past year is by sticking with the facts in the pursuit of the truth and accountability, and not having the story colored in any way by ideology or partisanship. Sibel repeatedly suggests that the reason the case doesn't get anywhere in Congress is because of the bipartisan nature of the guilty. The same is apparently true for the online media and blogs. We continue to encourage people to write about this story but it is important to keep to the facts, truthfully and fairly. The case is complicated as it is; exaggerations, distortions and mischaracterizations only cloud the matter.

Unfortunately, we are already seeing this happen. Thanks to one such case was caught in time and addressed. It's frustrating that we've come so far, and are so close to finally getting proper exposure to this story, only to see this type of thing break out.

For the record, my blog does not endorse or support Alexandrovna or her views. I ceased association and communication with her in mid-2007.

We do our work independently and diligently, and do not wish to become entangled in partisan fights, personal attacks and tainted views associated with her style and activities.

We wish her the best of luck, and thank her in advance for leaving us alone.

Sibel also wants to 'out' herself. She regularly reads my posts and your comments here at DU, and she comments occasionally too. Her screenname is StateSecrets. She doesn't have a lot of time to answer your questions, and probably can't answer most of them anyway, but I think she'll be dropping by here today to thank you again.

I forwarded the Times article to a fellow I met from CNN International a few months back. He seemed somewhat interested. But what we really need is the print media.

18. non DUers
A number of people are emailing me, saying that they weren't registered on DU, and thus won't be able to comment for 24 hours.

Here's one question:
--------------
The Times article says:

"She approached The Sunday Times last month after reading about an Al-Qaeda terrorist who had revealed his role in training some of the 9/11 hijackers while he was in Turkey."

Could she clarify exactly what it was in that first Times article that motivated her to speak to the Times? And how do the allegations in this week's article relate to the article about Louai al-Sakka?

---------------

I'm not sure that Sibel will be answering many (if any) questions about her case, but this is a good question.

So John Ashcroft asserted the State Secrets Privilege to block her court case. And again to prevent her from giving her deposition in the 9/11 Family Members Court case? And gagged Congress on her case? All because she couldn't do her job. Get real.

From what I have read, I don't see where she has gained anything - to the contrary I would think she has spent a lot of "bucks" in legal fees. And probably is facing real risks of 20 years, or much, much worse. Hats off to a brave lady. Give credit where it's due.

40. Thank You DU
Greeting DU Warriors,

I want to thank Luke Ryland, known as the world's foremost expert on the Edmonds case, for his relentless pursuit of the truth. Luke, you have done such an incredible job: diligent research, objective analysis not tainted by any agenda or partisanship, and a sincere and original writing style. Thank you for your support, your friendship, and your persistence on my behalf. It's been a great partnership.

Now I want to turn to all of you and say 'Thank YOU.' Thank YOU for your vigilance, for your quest for truth & justice, and for challenging the obstacles put up before us to keep us in the dark and turn us into sheep. Thank YOU for using this marvelous tool, the Internet, to defeat their grand plot to keep us under control through secrecy, gag orders, and their successful manipulation of the so-called Main Stream Media.

Please keep up the good fight; we can't give up, we can’t let them control us, and we won't.

Thank You,
Sibel Edmonds

117. suggestions
well-organized and coordinated phone/mail campaigns, targeting congress-House & Senate (appropriate committees such as:Judiciary & Government Reform), with CC's or parallel ones targeting the MSM. Also please continue your support of Luke Ryland. He does organize and lead campaigns, and he writes fantastic analysis needed to inform the public. Help him disseminate those; the more people, the better our chances.

Same with campaigns organized by Brad Friedman. I have so much respect for him. It is inspiring to see how he continues despite all obstacles. Please support him in any way you can.

74. Again and again this makes the MSM part of the crimes and
IMO just as culpable. Ask anyone you meet on the streets if they know who Sibel Edmonds is and you will get a blank stare.

The scary thing is that if all the so called investigative reporters in television and newspapers in this country are so afraid of what you have to tell them, our country is in serious trouble. There are no ends to what this administration and others in leadership positions will do to keep the secret secret.

Please be safe and count me in as someone who will continue spreading the word.

89. Sibel, first of all, thank you very much for refusing to give up, even in the face of ...
...such overwhelming opposition. I can't imagine what sort of mental torture it must be to know what you know and to be unable to talk about so much of it.

I've often tried to begin explaining why your story is so important to people who have never so much as heard your name, and I'm usually reduced to referring them to Google. How do I go about piquing their interest in your situation and what you have already been able to reveal?

Pretend I don't read any political blogs at all and get most of my information from newspapers and television. Why should "I" care about what you have to say?

I want people to listen to your story; how do I "reel them in", as it were?

There really isn't any short and sweet one-liner explanation, is there? It's more like those 5000 piece puzzles you see now and again... the kind without a border, because "they" know where people usually start putting together the pieces.

157. Because:
When I speak before an audience who's not familiar with this case or the dark side of their government, whether they are college students or senior citizens, I start with my 'usual analogy': A private citizen witnesses a criminal act (rape, theft, etc.), as a good Samaritan what will he/she do? They usually answer it this way: I dial 911; I report it to police...Then I ask them, what if he/she is working for the police/FBI/etc and the crimes is being committed there, by them; where will they go/who will they report it to? At this point they will say things like: congress, IG (or similar investigative entities), courts. This is the perfect point to introduce the official gag orders, State Secrets privilege, Retroactive Classification...invoked in my case. The first State Secrets invocation is a very short document, less than one page, signed by Ashcroft: Basically it says you can't talk about it, report it, have it investigated, because it is secret and the reason it is is also a secrets...

People, at least we the Americans, are usually appalled, shocked when they hear the above true story. Then, they want to know what it was, why...

Luke Ryland can provide you with my video taped speeches, and maybe that will help you get these people understand.

It's the same problem faced in a small town with a bad cop known for being bad, but who has the DA behind him. When the people being investigated are the ones who are doing, or attached to, the investigation, said investigation is easily tainted/stopped/gagged/swept under the rug. That it can happen at the highest levels of our government (and, indeed, the "world" government) is not merely sad, not merely disappointing, but in fact hideously dangerous.

You are, be it ever so slowly (because of "them"), bringing such things to light; I'll remember your story decades from now (and *I* will do what *I* can to spread it, say thankya). Stay safe, and keep saying whatever you're able to say.

87. Witnesses
We have several witnesses. At least 3 of them have gone to congress and provided them with information in support of my case. That's why 5 years ago, two Senators, Grassley (R) & Leahy (D), came out publicly and vouched for the credibility of my case and condemned (of course only verbally;-) the FBI/DOJ.

There are two other witnesses who are waiting to be subpoenaed by our congress. However, they were summoned during the DOJ-IG investigation and testified. The IG report vindicated my case & allegations.

76. Your Quote
I like your quote, and the more I look at it, the more I get it. How do you hold a government criminally liable? Or even an agency of the government? And if the government chooses to hide the actual individuals responsible behind a cloak of secrecy - because the individuals hold the power of government - then you can't get at them either, can you? So, yes, I see it.

204. With greatest respect...
I'm so glad to see you finally getting mainstream press coverage, although it's of course the international press that's paying attention while the US press does it's usual see, hear and speak no evil stenographer routine.

Your "dialing 911 when the culprit is your government" comment brings to mind the old rhyme, part of which was the title for that old John Bircher book gathering dust on thousands of thrift store shelves:

"Treason doth never prosper; what's the reason? For if it prosper, none dare call it treason."

I think that's the perfect description of what's happened in the US, starting with the bloodless coup of 2000, gathering speed and quasi-legitimacy on 9/11 and using it as the springboard to begin the race down an unswerving path leading to global military dominance and domestic repression.

I sincerely hope they fail in their mission, that you and other whistleblowers can be instrumental in their downfall and that I too can play a minuscule part in their date with justice. God knows they richly deserve it.

Very best,

wp

My parents. My closest friends, my siblings. My business partners, my coffee buddies. And, of course, my husband and my children.

Then there are a few others -- people I don't know, but they influence my life in different ways. So I think of them when I see their name, or I refer to them in conversation. Certainly President Bush would be one (although I consider his influence to be pretty negative). My favorite politiians. My favorite columnist. My favorite poster here on DU (okay, NanceGreggs - that'd be you). My favorite musician. The Jersey Girls. And you, Sibel. I send you warm wishes in my heart all the time. 214. Sibel, thanks so much! You've been an inspiration every day for me!
I'm sorry I missed you yesterday, but yesterday was a big day of meetings, etc.for me at work and I couldn't do much web surfing then. Also found out later that my father may have had a light heart attack too. I'm told he's fine now, but it has me nervous. Just lost one of my cats a month and a half ago and thought one of my worst years (2007) were behind me. Hoping things stay better this year! And I'm hoping that you are finally going to be "free" soon! It will give me incentive to change my SIG to be a GIF animation with the gag being taken off!

I'd like to think that one day that this country will fully appreciate the immensely valuable and risk taking work you've done for it, and hopefully Turkey will too, once they both get their cancers removed.

Another nonDUer asks via email:

--------------

I am extremely interested in knowing how closely Sibel has been
following the controlled demolition hypothesis concerning the WTC
buildings' destruction and whether she realizes that NIST has been
denying the existence of the melted steel...and whether she knows about
the Steven Jones WTC dust research (iron rich spheres and red/gray chips).

--------------

I think I can answer this one - Sibel doesn't know anything about any 'controlled demolition'.

edited to add: in case it's not clear from my original answer, as Randy notes, it was planes that hit the buildings.

As Sibel repeatedly says, we have enough evidence of wrongdoing and coverup without venturing into conspiracy speculation.

64. A Good Question
For 6 years, I followed the congressional and legal (court) venues; that simply doesn't work. It is designed that way, and we all know that.

Collectively we the people can do much more. Concentrate the efforts collectively and go after the MSM and your representatives. The congress, those committees are there to do exactly that: serve the people; represent them. Don't beg them for real oversight, hearings, accountability...Simply demand it. They are elected to do just that; you are paying them to do just that. The lobbyist may have the $$$$$, but we can have the ####.

200. Thanks for the media list - some LTTE suggestions
1) If you send directly to a local newspaper, please make sure you follow their letter to the editor rules. I have 3 locals in my area - the biggest (The Hartford Courant) prefers letters under 200 words, but sometimes runs longer ones on Saturdays. The other major daily prefers letters over 300 words and up to 500 words. Another paper prefers them under 150 words, but sometimes prints longer ones.

2) Try to keep your tone even-handed - if you open your letter insulting the paper's coverage or lack of coverage of the issue, you're almost certain to get deleted. Keep the snark to a minimum, but a good one-liner to open or close a letter can help to differentiate yours from others.

3) Make sure to enclose your contact information, if requested. Most papers like to confirm that it is really you that sent the letter, and it was not some automated service sending form letters. I've also been requested to provide support for my refutations of op-ed pieces as well - in the understaffed cutthroat world of the newspaper business, an assistant editor may not have the time to research every item of your letter.

Edited on Thu Jan-10-08 09:50 AM by warren pease
Here's a pretty good one for msm.

And another for the House and Senate.

On edit: I just noticed that Roland99 has already posted media and congressional contact lists. They're better organized than mine, so I'd use his instead.

Meanwhile, a :toast: to Sibil and the amazing work she's done and continues to do.

207. It's not lack of interest...
It's the fact that Americans don't look outside their borders or their narrow frames of reference for their news. So the usual disinformation purveyors get to spew the same old garbage with little or no criticism from readers and viewers. And when more than 90 percent of Americans say they get all or most of their "news" from TV, and when media consolidation has reduced TV's corporate voices to five, nobody's going to get much in the way of a typical BBC newscast -- or what's found on hundreds of internet news and information sites around the world.

Then there's the purpose of US media. Once so vital to the health of a functional democracy that it's the only business mentioned in the Constitution, the so-called "free press" has completely abandoned its role as government watchdog and scourge of the corrupt in favor of pure commercialism dedicated to delivering its consumers (us) to its advertisers. Sponsors hate controversy and so do corporate execs, so they're acting in perfect harmony and pursuing their mutual objectives by spiking any story that might cause a light to click on, or an unorthodox idea to hatch or an independent thought to emerge. So the objectives of high-level producers and editors, their corporate overlords and their advertisers dovetail perfectly and add up to a near-total blackout on political controversy.

Ultimately, though, it's marching orders from their corporate masters at GE, Viacom, CBS, Disney, TimeWarner and News Corp that make mass media the desert wasteland it is today. They hate change like normal people hate the flu, and they hire people into senior decision-making positions who are just like them. So you get a monolithic group of senior managers at the top of the food chain who act as filters, straining out the nutritious bits of information and only letting through a kind of tepid, unsatisfying thin gruel.

They're the same bunch of status quo apologists who marginalized Kucinich, and now Edwards. Who ignore global climate change. Who report uncritically on the recent incident in the Straits of Hormuz as if it actually happened. Who call Iraq a "war" and an escalation a "surge." Who won't touch grand theft election (2 counts). Who treat Dana Perino as a functional human.

The ones who run faux "exposes" on the private lives of D-class celebrities, but won't touch an honest story comparing the health care systems of the US and Canada. Who dutifully report on everything Bushie says and completely ignore context or fact checking. Who let themselves be "embedded" so that the propaganda stream could flow unimpeded by independent analysis. Who refuse to report on the numbers of US troop deaths, or those of Iraqi civilians. Who even obeyed KKKarl Rove when he forbade them to film coffins returning from Iraq. Who forgot about Pat Tillman the second the white house told them to. Who treat Twitany as news and the death of the republic as a sidebar.

You know... those guys. And how's the hunt for the anthrax going, eh? Got that herd of investigative reporters tracking down clues, or are they too busy staking out Paris' house to see if she runs into anything while navigating the driveway?

Ahhh.... that feels better. Now I'm awake.

I have, in the last year, began to see a direct line stretching from the attempt to check FDR by J.P. Morgan, Averell Harriman, and Prescott Bush into modern times. Call me crazy, but given what you seem to have in your back pocket, could such a thread be drawn? I know, way to big a question....

Anyway, keep your head up, and your powder dry. They can't sit on you forever. Your time will come.

You are very brave to do what you have done. I still don't understand how state secrecy can be retroactively invoked.

I have a question. Yesterday I read (I think via Steve Clemmons) a suggestion that perhaps you came upon a "fake" spy/selling weapons thing and for this reason the MSM and the state's secrets and all that.

Looking back, was there ever a time in which you recall being given any reason to back off (via your direct supervisor or otherwise?)

Considering the long deceitful history of the Bush League, I'm more inclined to believed that this action was a way to provide an ally for Israel, and to get cooperation from the Turkish govt. to fly over their airspace, etc.

again, thank you for trying to tell the truth. what a rare moment in this govt.

107. Lots of good questions!
1- Yesterday I read (I think via Steve Clemmons) a suggestion that perhaps you came upon a "fake" spy/selling weapons thing and for this reason the MSM and the state's secrets and all that.

Mr. Clemmons did not do his homework; no research. Because that was the first thing the Senate Judiciary Committee had to rule out before they took my case officially/formally and investigated it. In June & July 2002, two senior senators, Grassley (R) & Leahy (D), summoned several FBI-DOJ and DOD officials to rule out: 1- no covert operations involved; 2- No double agent situation in Dickersons' case. And they did. Mr. Clemmons is insulting these two senators' judgment and common sense?

2-Looking back, was there ever a time in which you recall being given any reason to back off (via your direct supervisor or otherwise?)?

No. In fact, the initial report was issued by the agent in charge of Turkish CI at the FBI Washington Field Office; SA Saccher. I was dragged into it later.

3- I still don't understand how state secrecy can be retroactively invoked.
It can't. However, no one challenged it. The congress took it as an order and obliged...

96. I think the big danger is...

now that the Edmonds case is getting some of the exposure it deserves, that it will start (or continue) getting lumped together with other "conspiracy theories" on the internet. This is the usual modus operandi for those defending right-wing criminals, that they deny that there are any conspiracies. This was blatantly done in Plame-gate with respect to Libby.

Best of luck to Sibel and we will always be here to provide what support that we can.

128. The Usual MO
You are right. It has been a regularly used method/weapon to label and marginalize many cases/many issues.

What we can do: always stick to the facts; refrain from exaggerating; be consistent, don't be afraid to dare them confidently when pursuing the truth, and do so in a civil manner.

Will that stop them from doing it anyway; at least to a certain degree? Of course not.

146. Great advice, thanks for that!

Now, I wonder about the BCCI factors underlying much of this corruption. This seems to be the elephant in the room that no government official or anyone in the US M$M wishes to address (except for maybe Kerry, in the past). I'm also concerned if a certain Democratic candidate moves on into the General Election if more Democrats will want this swept under the rug. I'll bet this has much to do with the current media blackout on your matter.

147. Since filmmaking is my background...
I can't help but imagine the amazing motion picture that will one day be made about you and your fight for the truth.

I know it must be really difficult to live through this experience, and I am certainly not trying to trivialize it, but your story is gonna make a GREAT movie some day. I feel certain of that, because I feel certain that justice will prevail (thanks to people like you and lukery).

Sometimes I cast film ideas in my head. Ron Howard should definitely write and direct it. He understands how to convey triumph in the face of adversity. Not sure who Johhny Depp should play, but he's gotta be in it, just cause I love him. I don't think he's ever worked with Ron though. So, if Ron Howard directs it, probably Russell Crowe would be in it. Also, not bad. But who would play Sibel? Hmmm. My first choice would be Salma Hayek. She would be marvelous. And the resemblance would be quite striking.

Anyway, it would be nice to get to the glorious ending, i.e. justice. That way, you can live your life in peace again and I can see what Ron does with the script.

(This post is meant to make you smile -- I would never trivialize your work.)

149. What about talking to Mark Cuban and HD Net (and Dan Rather)?
Or perhaps Al Gore and Current?

166. Hi, Sibel.
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 10:22 PM by JackBeck
I've been following your story for many years and have talked about it to everyone from my family to the elevator operator at my office. I can't begin to thank you, lukery, Brad and all of the others for your hard work.

My question: Do you think Dennis Hastert's early "retirement" has anything to do with information that you have uncovered?

167. So Long For Now
This was a great experience. This was a first: meeting and connecting with you, the movers and shakers of today's activism.I have done hundreds of radio interviews...but I was nervous here, being a novice. Thank you all for your kindness.

We shall continue this fight until the truth prevails.

Regards,
Sibel

182. Hi, Sibel.
I just missed you. Getting home late from teaching a night class.

My 68-year-old mother, who is not a DUer or blogger, saw your interview on 60 Minutes at the time, was very upset angry by it and by what it was obvious our government was doing.

Hope to hear from you again soon! We'll keep carrying the light.

I consider it an honor (to be honest, when I read you were coming here, I grinned like a kid who got *just* what he wanted for Christmas). I, like many others, will do what I can to spread your story to as many as possible.

Stay safe, and keep fighting the good fight.

198. I can remember when the Soviet Union's News Services were
belittled for being propagandistic "state-run" media and I've read about the Nazi use of the same. Amazing how the United States has become so like these former practioners of deceit. American politics is so complicit with corporate and media power that "integrity" has to be suspect--who knows whether disinformation is hitting you, influencing you, or upsetting the presumed ideals of democracy?

Until we know from Ms. Edmonds herself, I must begin to discount and ignore everything about these events. I appreciate the investment of time from so many truth-diggers, but the soul rotting acid that keeps spewing about prevents me from investing too much hope for a return to integrity.

224. Sibel, if you happen to drop by ,,, I have a question ...
... will you marry me?

Seriously, you are one of my heroes. I mention your case as often as I can and have people promise to become aware of your plight. You stumbled across what might become one of the biggest criminal cases of all time and have the courage to stare down the strongest evil forces on Earth, we all should be inspired with such courage.

I was thinking, are there any T-shirts? Picture of you gagged, caption "Let Sibel Speak", with information on your case, web-site, ...? If not, perhaps a way to raise money? I'd buy several ...
