New national Gallup poll: Clinton 33%, Obama 33%, Edwards 20%.
Edited on Mon Jan-07-08 05:21 PM by milkyway
A new USA Today/Gallup national survey (Gallup release) of 1,023 adults (conducted 1/4 through 1/6) finds:

Among 423 Republicans and those who lean Republican, former Gov. Mike Huckabee runs at 25%, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani at 20%, and Sen. John McCain at 19% in a national primary; former Sen. Fred Thompson trails at 12%, former Gov. Mitt Romney at 9%.

Among 499 Democrats and those who lean Democratic, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama both run at 33% in a national primary; former Sen. John Edwards trails at 20%.
All other candidates receive less than five percent each. The margin of sampling error is 5% for both subgroups.

Note that the polling data is all post-Iowa.

4. What's also a "wow" is that Romney, the billionaire who's the choice of the repug establishment,
limps in with 9% nationally. Almost hard to believe. He probably could afford to actually buy more votes than that just by standing on a street corner handing out money.

3. What value is a national poll for state by state party primaries?
Each primary is a state by state affair. So is the presidential election as we all can well remember when Gore won the popular vote in 2000--state by state, not national.

5. These national polls had Hillary up 20 points or more a week or two ago.
That is the importance.

6. It shows a trend
She was up 18 points in this same poll a month ago, and has bled that massive lead. We havent seen state by state poll results, but what this shows is that all these states on Feb 5th may be in play even more so now.

7. Yes, but one of Hillary's main arguments to her contributors is that she was still strong
nationally and would win big delegate counts. The national polls seem to be her real firewall. Like I learned in '04 with Dean, once that snowball starts rolling too far down the hill it gets really hard to stop.
