John Edwards in New Hampshire: "We are Seabiscuit"
January 4, 2008 7:39

At a rally Elizabeth Edwards likened her husband to Seabiscuit -- the famed Depression-era race horse who overcame all kinds of handicaps to win race after race. "You saw how much attention some candidates got, how much money," she said. "Well, it seems to me that the perfect metaphor is Seabiscuit."

But, she warned, rivals "can't count on any broken legs, this man doesn't make mistakes."

Edwards picked up on the metaphor, saying the New Hampshire primary "will not be about celebrity. It will not be about glitz. It will be about who can galvanize this movement because that's what this is, a movement for change. We are Seabiscuit."

"I am not the candidate or glitz; I am not the candidate of glamour," Edwards said. "I am the candidate who will fight with every fiber of my being every step of the way... I am the candidate for president of the United States that is the people's candidate."

Kerry came into the race with plenty of advantages, including a ton of money.

19. Kerry was not Seabiscuit
More like "the little Chuchu who thought he could" but lacked the fortitude to make the fight when Ohio was stolen

Nice try

I should know. I was the original "Seabiscuit For Dean" poster on the DFA blogs back in 2003 during Dean's grand tour of the country.

I like Edwards but he keeps stealing stuff from Kucinich ... like the "sea biscuit" analogy and like
Kucinich's statement at one of the debates that he's the "only candidate who gets it right the first
time".

Hey, John, were you right when you co-sponsored the Iraq War Bill? Yeesh!

10. "The people's candidate" GREAT line....stick with it, John! The People's candidate that will get us
out of Iraq! It's the war, stupid!

Hillary blew it by trying to be the Democrat's warmongering president. We are SO through with Iraq and she just cannot get that through her thick skull. I wonder if she'll try a new strategy on Iraq now?

16. Dennis used this back when the Seabiscuit movie came out a few years ago....
They had a whole thing about handing out leaflets at the movie theatres.....

Edwards seems to be borrowing a lot from Kucinich....but honestly, at this point, I hope it works better for him than it did before.....cause of the top 3, I'd most likely go with Edwards.

24. Seabiscuit was owned by a car salesman turned corporatist
Charles S. Howard made a fortune selling Buicks out west, then made a whole lot more when he bailed out financial overextended Billy Durant (Buick, then General Motors head honcho) by loaning him 3 million dollars and received a substantial chunk of General motors stock in compensation.

While he was selling cars he said, "I wouldn't give $50 for the fastest horse alive". Shrewd businessman.

36. Kucinich may sue Edwards for stealing the "Sea Biscuit" analogy
actually he probably can't and/or won't because it is relatively trivial, but it is kind of weird of Edwards to use this since Dennis has long
described himself as the Sea Biscuit candidate for Prez.

45. Apparently not, as DK won't support the Democratic nominee.
It's one thing for a DU'er to say that, but another thing for a Democratic Congressman to refuse to sign the pledge.

47. didn't DK give his Iowa votes to Obama on second round?
I was surprised they didn't go to Edwards instead, but he did show support for Obama. I think Dennis will support the Dem
nominee.

I interpreted DK's refusal to sign the oath as him not being keen on announcing before even the first primary
that he would lose. ... but that's through my rose colored glasses.

The Seabiscuit analogy may have worked... if he actually won.

But he bet everything on Iowa and lost. In all likelihood, he'll finish third in NH. If he has any dignity, he'd bow out after that.

...

"I am not the candidate or glitz; I am not the candidate of glamour."
John, you are the last person who should be caught on camera saying that. It practically dares anyone bring up that old YouTube vid, your bank account, and/or the size of your home. Oops.

I'll follow this man into Hell or The White House with a HiDef camera and stream it all over the Web...

Those of you who know me know I'm dead serious, I followed all the Candidates last election all over New Hampshire, filmed the Democratic Convention, as well as flew deadeye from Hawaii when No Media was scheduled to film the Downing Street Minutes Hearing in DC.. I literally CHASED Conyers down an underground hallway in the basement of the Capitol building to Get IN :)

I'll represent both the DU and Takebackthemedia.com, and THE WEB..

No bullshit here, I love the man, and the Truth that much, just too poor to pay attention at the moment... But, like Edwards I have the Strength of Ten Men because my heart is Pure :)
