What does the Pakistani Government Gain by Changing Stories?
It's evident, now, the Pakistani Government is lying and trying to misinform the Pakistani People. My question is why? This kind of attempt to cover truth does nothing but raise suspicion and cause more anger.

Someone who knows Pakistani and Muslim culture may have a better idea. But, I don't understand what difference it will make in the minds of the People what the exact cause of death was. It was death by assassination regardless of what wound inflicted. Why would the government benefit from a different story? Why risk looking guilty to change the official cause?

Now they look like liars, and cause many to more strongly believe that they have something to hide in this murder.

1. Confusion, distraction
...and the loss of solidarity of the masses that comes with uncertainty?

2. If people were already suspecting government involvment,
wouldn't these recent statements only fuel the fire?

8. Well, you'd think so
But BushCo use the same method, and are usually successful in distracting everyone from the crux of the matter to argue about the nitty gritty. Look at the Plame/Libby case. How many Americans do you think understand that no one was ever charged with outing Plame?

10. Good point.
Media time on bullet/head bump is media time away from "what does this mean for the people of Pakistan" or "how was this allowed to happen" or "who benefits from the assassination?"

4. That's how it appears to me.
I wonder which will occur first: New Martial Law, or Mushy's removal?

The *extremists* have tried to kill him no less than four times. Now, the Populace is enraged at him. How can he survive that?

7. The problem has been corrected.
Previously they used small focus groups to test their stories. With small groups, extrapolating is prone to error. Now they have increased the focus group size. Future stories will not be released until they have been properly tested.

Wait, do you mean that you expect them to tell the truth and feel guilty if they don't?

11. They don't want her to be a martyr.
They don't want her to be a martyr. If she just hit her head it's an accident, if she's shot, martyr.

12. She died due to an assassins attempt to kill her.
Does that not qualify for martyrdom? This may be a cultural/religious belief that I don't understand.

13. Shades of grey.
Taking a bullet for a cause is alot stronger than an accident. I just think this was their governments attempt to keep her from becoming a martyr, it's not going to work.

18. Thanks,
It seems it is about martyrdom, above protecting the assassin. Although both are probable reasons.

17. One thing
is simply that bullets are forensic evidence. Saying there were no bullets recovered from the body means there is a reduced amount of evidence available.

Perhaps more important is to understand the psychology of killing a group's representative/champion in a very public manner -- in front of the group -- and then "officially" denying that what they absolutely saw and heard did not happen. The Pakistani government is telling Bhutta's followers, as well as other groups, that they can kill their leaders in full view of the public, and make a false "official" record of what happened.

21. Time. I believe we will see a complete video of her assassination soon enough.
When you look at the video you can see someone taking a phone video of her, right when the shots were being fired.

26. The Pakistani Gov.t is the one doing the talking.
They are the ones spewing lies that counter video.

I don't assume it is solely the Pakistani gov.t that is attempting to gain something or cover something up. But, they are lying for a reason.

27. I heard it was to prevent her from being considered a Martyr.
I guess if someone is killed they are considered having been martyred in the Islam religion, but not so if they jie from some kind of accident or illness, thus the stories about hitting her head on the sunroof, and having a heart attack stories.
