Biden was on Tweety tonight. . .
He looked a bit shaken. He repeated, several times, that the 70% of the population of Pakistan is secular and moderate. They are the ones that must be given a voice, and right now they don't have one. He was most anxious that elections go forward as planned. But he couldn't name anyone besides Sharif who could run for this constituency.

His position in Congress on the Foreign Relations Committee gives him a perspective on this assassination that I respect.

Does anyone here know anything about Sharif?

1. Here's some info, annabanana
This collection of BBC articles has some info on Sharif and also about the critical years from 1998 to 2001.

3. Thank you so very much for these links.. It's a crash-course
in US, Pakistani relations that a lot of us could use. (I did not recognize Sharif's name from a mere 8 years ago -)

Pakistan army seizes power
The army in Pakistan has announced the dismissal of the government after seizing control of key installations across the country.
Soldiers surrounded the residence of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, closed down the country's main airports and took over state radio and television.
The action followed the dismissal of Pakistan's army chief, General Pervez Musharraf, who is to address the nation shortly.

I am a big fan of Joe Biden. He's plain spoken and doesn't really have anything to prove. He also has a lot of International experience, and a broad understanding of how governments operate.

4. Yes, the years before 2001 becomes hazy, you're not the only one
At least when the topic is somewhat pheripheral. I suffer from the same, that was why I started to dig into this ;-)
