Archbishop Desmond Tutu Apologizes
Tutu Apologises for Persecution of Gays on BBC Radio Tonight

“I want to apologise to you and to all those who we in the church have persecuted”

MANCHESTER, December 17, 2007 – Archbishop Desmond Tutu has apologised to gay people all around the world for the way they have been treated by the Church.

(snip)
“I’m sorry that we have been part of the persecution of a particular group. For me that is quite un-Christ like and, for that reason, it is unacceptable.

“May be, even as a retired Archbishop, I probably have, to some extent, a kind of authority but apart from anything let me say for myself and anyone who might want to align themselves with me, I’m sorry.

“I’m sorry for the hurt, for the rejection, for the anguish that we have caused to such as yourselves.”

1. A man that should not have to apologize, apologizes
Think the church itself will apologize or change its stance? Not with this Pope.

12. As Techbear said: where's the Archbishop of Canturbury
Rowan Williams is the closest thing Anglicanism has to a Pope. He's a nice guy, but he hasn't shown leadership on this. I think there is a fear of losing the American Anglicans (Episcopal). The truth is that the strong anti-gay Episcopals are in the minority (within the Episcopal church).

Who knew that the Gay-Hating Jesus was going to emerge from the http://www.subgenius.com/updates/X0007_Hundreds_of_Jesuses_.html">pantheon of Jesii with such a rabid following.

14. No worries. It's an odd, half-Protestant, half-Catholic church that has both ministers and priests.

2. Wow. Just wow.
I wonder how that'll go down with the fundy crowd. But then again he protested against Apartheid so he's probably considered a damn commie by them.

 to the Bishop. And may he happily move in diagonals for a long time.

3. His words are appreciated, but...
He personally has no need to apologize. When will we hear the Archbishop of Canterbury apologize? How about any of the US' past (or current) Presiding Bishops? They have far more to answer to.

He's an amazing example of a true civil rights leader. Hopefully, more will follow his lead.

No mean feat.

Edited on Wed Dec-19-07 01:23 AM by tom_paine
that has only been elevated by this comment.

It takes not only a big man, but a decent human being to be able to recognize a wrong, reverse his previosu position, and speak out against it. I wonder how many of his supposedly "enlightened" colleagues are excoriating him for his stance and his words?

21. There are multitudes of great religious and non-religious DU persons.
Most DUers, though, regardless of what they believe, take issue with how religion is used to dictate both a governmental and moral code in the United States.

26. When he speaks for Anglicans, it is a LARGE thing.
The Worldwide Anglican Communion has a great many homophobes. Many of those Diocese are in Africa and the Middle East where the strictures against homosexuality are severe and nearly universal.

The current fissure in the American Episcopal church is between the Episcopal administration, which is quite progressive, and a few individual, right wing Diocese.. who are aligning themselves with the more conservative Anglican Communion and against the Episcopal Church of America.

Bishop TuTu is a light in the darkness.

27. I've only ever been able to criticize him for his continuing allegiance to a church...
...that engages in the persecution from which he's now distancing himself. Well done, Archbishop!

That is a leader!

28. I think I just heard my neighbors head explode,
you know the one who thinks gays are made and can be un made, yep him the fundie. At least he seems to be a democrat otherwise though.
I might ought to go check on him but I think I'll just let him wallow in his stupidity with his wife at his side.

Thank you Archbishop Desmond Tutu, I salute you for being so kind as to raise awareness on an issue that has been destroying lives for far too long. Its time for people to wake the hell up and accept the fact that our gay friends are born that way just as sure as I wasn't. this is not to be taken as a cut to anyone with my use of, 'that way'
peace

29. Funny how Archbishop Tutu has apologized for something he's not responsible for
But Obama has yet to apologize for placing an "ex-gay" clown front and center at his campaign event to insult LGBT folks.
