**Seriously. Please Call Nancy Pelosi About This.**
Upon stopping into my local pain clinic here in Los Angeles to pick up my legally-prescribed medical cannabis, I picked up a flyer that states the following:

"Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has made it known that if enough people call her this week, she will open Congressional Hearings on medical cannabis. Please be one of the 10,000 and make that call!"

Now, to be honest, I couldn't find the exact origin of the flyer online, and perhaps she didn't say this (if not, she should!) - but I think calling her to find out and encourage this move either way is a good idea.

Let me tell you why.

I started enjoying marijuana about six years ago, shortly before 9/11. At the time, I was clinically depressed and had a host pf personal issues to deal with from my childhood. Years of therapy, meds, blah blah blah. Helpful - but I found that the use (NOT abuse) of pot really helped me cope, especially after the 2001 attacks.

Incidentally, at the same time, my optometrist was concerned with the possibility that I might have glaucoma. Fast forward six years later, and it turns out the concern was warranted - but my then-illegal use froze the malady in its tracks.

Medical marijuana saved my sight, literally. It stops the horrendous, close-to-clawing-my-eyes-out pain and pressure associated with glaucoma, and prevents me from essentially going slowly blind.

But don't make that call for me. Make it for the millions of people who use marijuana safely and responsibly, despite the draconian federal laws based on the lie of marijuana's "danger". Make it for the thousands of nonviolent drug offenders incarcerated for smoking a little weed while living full, healthy lives.

Make it for people like Stephanie Landa, who suffered under the War on (Some) Drugs' laws despite having police protection for growing medical cannabis for ill patients:

http://panorg.blogspot.com/

On January 4, 2007, 60-year old mother, caregiver to her elderly mother, free spirit and friend Stephanie Landa began a 41-month federal prison sentence for the cultivation of cannabis in the sanctuary city of San Francisco.

Dozens of friends and supporters as well as numerous members of the media came out to hear 9 passionate speakers including 9th District Supervisor Tom Ammiano and 6th District Supervisor Chris Daly of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors as well as Commissioner David Campos of the San Francisco Police Department. These officials all agree that THIS SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED.

Stephanie, along with others in 2002, was given permission as well as guidelines from SFPD Captain Kevin Cashman to grow medical cannabis for the collectives in the SF Bay Area. The garden was established around the corner from the SF police department by request of the department for the purpose of the garden and gardeners’ safety.

Then Lt. Martin Halloran and other SFPD raided the approved garden and placed all the patients in the facility in handcuffs. Stephanie insisted that they could not do this, they had permission from Capt. Cashman and that Halloran knew this because he attended the same meeting. Halloran denies he was ever at the meeting despite the testimony of others, however, the other SFPD officers would not continue the raid without Cashman. Upon Cashman’s arrival he demanded that all patients be uncuffed and released as they could not be arrested because the city gave them permission.

Please call Pelosi about this, and do it this week. (While you're at it, demand impeachment proceedings begin, so we can investigate and hold accountable this criminal administration).

If anyone has the toll-free Congressional switchboard number, that would also be a huge help.

Thanks from me and all patients who need this medicine for your calls and support!

1. All joking aside, Marijuana is a gift to the planet.
A harmless, healing plant... It should be freed.

6. that's just the pot talking. LOL
yes, they have staff that do the smaller things while warfare and being the speaker of the house consume their real time. And of course, it's a frivolous pamphlet that you received. The "10000 callers" sounds like another one of those annoying email forwards where good things will only happen to you if you send this to all the people in your address book type things. I wish you well with it, pot seems to help a lot of people with medical problems, and should be legalized for that purpose.

8. As I said, it's not a bad idea to suggest either way.
If you don't wish to lend support to the idea, that's your choice.

Thank you for the well-wishing.

14. Yeah, let the big pharma corporations charge up the ying yang for something
anyone can grow on their window sill.

Why not let them smoke it? It's been done for thousands of years and it hasn't been particularly harmful for anyone yet.

15. They do make it in pill form
It is called marinol.
I tried it once in the early 80's.Way to strong, beleive it or not.
Smoking it,as bad as smoking can be for your lungs, allows one to 'regulate' the dosage to a degree.

23. Where's the evidence it's damaging to your lungs?
It's a bronchial dilator (as opposed to cigarette smoke, which is a bronchial constrictor).

24. This I did not know
I have been under the impression that inhaling any type of smoke damages the lungs. It would seem like the resin that builds up in bongs and pipes would also do the same in your lungs.I can't imagine that that could actually be good for you.

25. It does seem counterintuitive, I know!
I was surprised myself to learn that there's never been a confirmed case of marijuana smoke-caused lung cancer.

16. You don't have to smoke it...
You can put it in food...it's been put in pill form (Marinol) but it doesn't work as well. Researchers in other countries are exploring other options, such as inhalers and vaporizers. Researchers in this country aren't because the draconian laws and the position of the FDA is that marijuana has "no medicinal value." They have effectively stopped any research that proves otherwise, prefering to portray medicinal or recreational users as druggies and criminals rather than the hard-working, taxpaying, and otherwise law-abiding citizens we are.

Another benefit we would receive from changes in the marijuana laws would be the ability for our farmers to grow HEMP. Hemp can be used for clothing, paper, food (very high in protein), and really just about anything. Ford made the first prototype car from pressed hempboard, which he found to be just as strong as steel, and also ran it on hemp oil. Hemp is a naturally pest and disease resistant crop, doesn't require the fertilizer that other crops do, and doesn't drain the fields it's grown in of nutrients as many crops do. That means a farmer doesn't have to let a field lay fallow for one or more growing seasons as many of our other crops necessitate. It would be an excellent replacement crop for farmers who no longer grow (or who would like to quit growing) tobacco. I say that AS A SMOKER (yes, I do keep trying to quit - it just hasn't stuck yet). I live in Tobacco Country - NC. I'd really rather see our farmers growing hemp than tobacco, and I REALLY rather see them growing hemp than selling their land to developers for subdivisions we don't need.

18. The problem with the pill form
is that cancer and AIDS patients often barf it up before it can be absorbed into their system. Smoking delivers it to your system through the blood stream, and gives the patient the added bonus of not only having an appetite but the relaxed body muscles to hold the food down.

22. 1) Marinol is not nearly as effective, as it does not contain all the cannaboids...
...that our brain's receptors work with (yes, we have cannaboid receptors in our brains).

2) Why do you care how we take our medicine?

17. K&R - I will do this today!
When I can afford it (I'm unemployed, thanks to the Decider) I use it medicinally too - for migraines, chronic insomnia, severe hot flashes (that was an accidental discovery, but it's better than any of the prescription meds the Drs have given me, or natural products that have been recommended) and terminal irritability.

It is time for us to change our marijuana laws - hell, it's way PAST time!
