Guiliani: "The best way you deal with dictators...is you stand up to them, you don't back down."

Guiliani TV ad questioned

<snip>

The spot, in heavy rotation in New Hampshire, is called "One Hour," and it tells the story of the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis, when American hostages were held for 444 days.

"And then they released the American hostages in one hour," Guiliani recounts as a piano plays softly in the background.

"The one hour in which they released them was the one hour in which Ronald Reagan was taking the oath of office as president of the United States."

"That should tell us a lot about these Islamic terrorists we're facing…The best way you deal with dictators, the best way you deal with tyrants and terrorists is you stand up to them, you don't back down."

But that's pretty much the opposite of what America did.

...

"The ad is ironic in that the actual release of the hostages happened because of this great international cooperation spearheaded by the Algerian government," he added.

Plus, it was President Jimmy Carter's administration, not Reagan, who brokered the hostages' release – the Iranians only waited until Reagan was in office to embarrass the outgoing Carter. (The wanted to punish him for actions he had taken, including the fateful Operation Eagle Claw.)

3. Repugs had help from Teheran to rewrite history
I remember the hostage release, how startling it was in its suddenness. Even though I wasn't politically savvy back then, the timing made it clear to me that someone was trying to make Carter look bad. Later I believed the common rumor that Reagan's incoming administration had brokered a deal with Iran to release the hostages right after he was sworn in to cast him in the role of savior. So it came as no surprise to learn the truth: it had nothing to do with Reagan. His people didn't lift a finger -- except to wrap him in the Stars & Stripes when the opportunity presented itself.

Sound like anyone else we know?

4. I take it Rudy has never heard of "correlation without causation".
Ronald Reagan no more released those hostages than Osama bin Laden did.

If anything, his win over Carter delayed the hostage release. Waiting until Carter's last day in office was just perversity on the part of the Iranians.

6. And He Knows This, How?
What profound geopolitical and diplomatic experience is gained by being a mayor? Because he knew how to deal with the mayor of Newark?

Give me a break. His track record is non-existent. And, they complain Obama lacks experience. Maybe Barack ought to start lying about what he's good at, too.

8. and Reagan then stood up to the dictator hostage-taker by illegally selling him weapons.
Edited on Mon Dec-10-07 12:20 PM by terisan
and big media then gave a big job to the Reagan military aide who secretly sold the weapons to the dictator of Iran and then had destroyed evidence to conceal their crimes, and Reagan's vp then Georg Bush the elder, as outgoing president himself thwarted the investigation of his own role in Reagan's illegal selling of munitions to the dictator by pardoning his own Secretary of Defense so he would have no impetus to testify agaist Bush,

Ray McGovern is right----the rotten apples at the top have spoiled the great American apple barrel.
