Poll question: If somebody (or a group) does something crappy/immoral to someone else (or another group)...
... Is it generally alright for the wronged party to do the same crappy/immoral thing back?

Just curious about DUers' feeling on the matter.

(A lot of things are intentionally left to the reader's interpretation.)

1. If so, then society has a net "gain" of
two crappy immoral things, and no one wins.

2. It depends on what the trangression was don't you think?
If you are referring to the way that the Republicans while in the majority treated the Dems while in the minority.....hmmm

The Dems having been in power less than 3 months have shown more inclusiveness than the Repugs did in the last 12 years. Should the Dems bend over backwards to include the Republicans (who are fighting tooth and nail to stop progress)...I say no...give them a chance to particpate and if they don't want then screw them....that's all..

6. Do two wrongs ever make a right?
Most of us learned that they didn't by the time we were five.

I did revenge a couple of times when I was very young. I found that it didn't feel as good as I thought it would. I eventually learned that whatever deep flaw had caused someone to wrong me would eventually do a worse number on them than I ever could.

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth makes the world blind and toothless.

8. How a person behaves is based on what kind of a human being they are

the actions of others has nothing to do with what kind of a person I am.

I liked what he wrote. Don't you have firm principles that do not change regardless of those around you? Chameleons make for poor humans.

if you gave people more than single lines people would probably be able to understand what you're talking about and reply to you topically.

As it is, I don't know what parenting has to do with this.

10. I know its immoral
Cast me into the lake of fire for it if you wish...
But I have learned that deterrence must be established.
As a kid I was under constant attack. Then I learned that a spectacular response keeps the dirtbags away for months.
If some jerk pops you once, you beat them down and kick their ribs in to make an example.
Even retaliation isn't enough to deal with Republicons. they'll just budget their losses as the cost of doing business.
Its a very basic form of communication.
"We're even now. Strike me again, dirtball and there's no more you."

11. Tit for tat, or an eye for an eye usually just escalates the situation.
Makes for a positive feedback loop of people doing nasty things to each other...
Hey- wait a minute. I'm seeing a point being made very subtly here...

There's usually other ways to handle a situation.
For me at least, revenge never tasted anywhere NEARLY as good as I thought it would...
and by the time it got 'cold' I wasn't interested anymore.

12. Sometimes yes, sometimes no
Too broad (oh god, can I use that word anymore??) of a scenario really.

Example: Group A takes Group B's rights away (as they perceive them to be rights) then when B has power they might do the same (on a temporary basis) to prove a point and educate group A about what it is like in hopes that both A & B can work together having both experienced the same thing and found that neither liked it.

-In general- no, I don't personally condone it or find it morally the best method. But like anything - a case by case basis is prudent.

those particular Israeli warplanes came from?

If we're going to ask this question, we might as well use a real world example.

15. I voted no.
BUT if the person is a psychopath I say do whatever it takes to FORCE them to stop abusing people.I don't care what it takes to stop them either, or how bad the bully gets messed up.

Psychopaths have no conscience no inner restraints, they are 1 in 4 people ,and they will not stop hurting other people unless they are forced to stop it by a person who stands up and makes them stop..

So if a non psychopath hurts me I ask them to stop and they stop often they also apologize and feel bad they did that to me..I have no right to hurt them if they can understand they hurt me and stop it by themselves.I have to give people a chance to stop it by themselves after I warn them so they can demonstrate they have a conscience before I attempt to force them to stop it.

But for a psychopath this does not apply for he does not care that he hurt me and if I pity him ,make excuses for him,and tolerate his abuses he will take my kindness as "permission" or "weakness" and use it to justify hurting me again until I FORCE him to stop it.

Not all people are good and have good intentions in this world. Just because I myself cannot imagine myself abusing someone for"kicks"or to alleviate boredom or play some mind game for sport... it does not mean another person, a psychopath ,feels it is wrong to do that and has the inner restraints to not do that to someone else.

24. "Generally"? It's far too vague a question to answer, beyond "sometimes".
There are vast numbers of situations in which each of "yes" and "no" is the correct answer.

25. Frankly, I believe this very question
reveals the root of the demonization of the "other in the U.S. The "terror scare" in Boston was all about how Amis "expect" to get HIT.
WHY? Because they KNOW how HORRIBLY "the other" has been treated at their hands and LOATHE the idea of blowback in Panavision, technicolor.
